There's a high-pitched ringer sound that all the cool kids are using. It's high enough that they can hear it, but adults (ie teachers) can't. So they can have their phones ringing in school and no authority figures know ( Read more... )

I can hear these tones, despite having quite a bit of mid-range hearing loss from working in mainframe computer rooms. However, it seems to be far more annoying to me than to other people. To me it sounds like someone drilling your teeth, which is really tedious. They are starting to play that tone during the first second or so of commercials. (I assume to get the attention of all the kids.)

Oh...I'm one of the people who can hear stuff like that. That would really drive me crazy. Though, obviously, not hearing it is a problem, too.

We dealt with a couple companies at work where that sound was the main focus. Of the 4 people in the room, I was the only one who could hear it. 20 times later, I had the worst headache in the room.

KFC had an ad using the sound for a while. Whenever it cut to the KFC bowl the squelch would play.

Seriously annoying.
