Les Miserables, written by Victor Hugo. It was originally published in French, in the year 1862. It captures the spirit of the French people, in the way that only Victor Hugo could manage. Some parts of the novel are long and tedious, but the strength and charisma of the characters shine through even through the darkest times ( Read more... )

caution: emotions run high, there is no song for this one, this place is fucked up, missing the people who leave us, a teensy bit selfish, it's lonely at the top, she spends too much time with enjolras, there may be alcohol involved, arthur is her big brother, my heart is too big for this, the diva has lost her voice, can't read my poker face, enjolras had a bigger fight to fight, total ecplise of the heart

Inebriated, Miss Rachel?

[You can practically hear the italics on that first word.]

I believe I can help with the book, but why on earth would you want to get drunk?

Because I feel stupid and reckless and it seemed like an easy way to get it out of my system instead of doing something legitimately stupid and reckless.

If you have a copy of the novel, I would love it.

I'll be right over. However--there will be no inebriation, alright?

[Rachel doesn't bother insisting with text. She is too full of melancholia.]

I hardly see the point in remaining sober for how long I've been stuck here.

[Pause.]

Thank you.

[He doesn't bother responding over the network--simply clicks off the PCD and starts making his way over to Rachel's house. At a brisk pace, it doesn't take all that long to get there, and he immediately knocks on the door.]

[She opens the door a little reluctantly, peering outside of it nervously from a crack -- after running into Lucifer, she's a little skittish of just letting people inside -- but when she finds out it's just Arthur, she maintains that level of distance for about ten seconds before she hugs him tightly.]

I've never looked for it at the casino.

It is actually a collection of stories. It begins with the story of a man named Jean Valjean, imprisoned for an extraordinarily amount of time for stealing a loaf of bread. He winds up being released, but goes into hiding instead of obeying the hand of the law. He becomes a factory owner, a well respected man in the community, even though he is a felon. A man named Javert vows to hunt him down, for eternity, to bring him to true justice. But Valjean leaves regardless, to form his business ( ... )

[Renji ignores all that crap about a book. Reading's not his thing. But when it comes to alcohol and a pretty gal who needs help with it?

Well, that's an entirely different story. If only he were in a better mood to drink, considering his best friend is a hostage right now.]

Y'realize the world's gone to shit right now, don't ya?

[Rachel has no idea who this person is -- so she sticks to text.]

One of my best friends has gone home to die.

I am very well aware of the state of the world.

I am not here to be lectured. I am here to be moderately irresponsible for once in my life. Either assist me or don't.
