I remember when Graham and I tried to talk Glen Hallit into making the Cybernet Space Cube into Rook's news network. Sadly, he lost the license before we could find out if our begging worked.
See, I love that they've cleaned it up and it looks good (I too giggled over "A new episode of Power Rangers") but what gets to me are when they clearly edited out fight bits that I guess are too violent now even though they weren't 17 years ago, but also those stupid captions. This isn't a comic book adaptation - we know Rita Repulsa is an evil Sorceress and that the Sabre-Toothed Tiger Zord is for the yellow ranger!
Except in the toys, where the Saber-Toothed Tiger Zord is for Tommy. (The new "rider" sets that can combine with the MegaZord or other new vehicles have Red with T-Rex, Black with Mammoth, Blue with Triceratops...and Green with a yellow Saber-Tooth. D'oh. Girl figures get zero respect.)
The sad thing is that you were the first person I thought of when I saw this monstrosity, only I figured I can't really accurately reproduce screaming and crying via e-mail.
Remastered Power Rangers? What the fuck is the point of that? You might as well just air thirty minutes of a graphic of Calvin peeing on a sign that says 'Original fans'.
Honestly, I was kind of shocked at how LITTLE they did to it. I mean, it's a show almost two decades old that was made on a shoestring budget... then transported to another country and spliced into a different show with a shoestring budget. Anyone who says it's aged well is lying. It was never "well" to begin with.
That said, I'm not happy with the changes that were made. It looks like they tried to hype up the Japanese with the weird cut-out stuff, and the on-screen labels and comic book framing have me thinking that they're using leftover Big Bad Beetleborgs SFX.
But the people gnashing teeth over it are giving it too much credit. It's not the immutable work of art... really, it's one of the farthest things from it.
As I said, I wasn't thrilled with the changes either. Between the original and the remastered version, I'd happily take the original. I just don't agree with the mentality that treats the series like it was this holy perfection that's been destroyed out of hand, which I think many of the complaints do.
Not accusing you of going all Chicken Little/RUINED FOREVER necessarily. My reply to you was largely because I agreed with the spirit of your post (what's the point of this "remastering") if not all the implications.
Metallo always annoyed me. Basically he was a walking fridge. "Hi, Superman, I'm useless until I open this door! Better hope I don't open this door! Oops, I oiled the hinges!"

As one who loved Power Rangers at age 3 and up, I say: AWESOME! :DDDD
(hey, even back then I knew it looked bad and loved it)
