So, what?

short_takes is a bi-weekly Baby-Sitters Club girlslash ficathon community. Every two weeks, I'll run a new mini-ficathon, focusing on a different girl from the BSC books. The idea belongs to cadence_k, who runs femslash_minis in the Jossverse.

Bi-weekly? That's awful quick!

Well, yes, it is. But you'll always have a full week to write your story, which need only be 500 words long, and you don't need to participate in every round, only the ones that interest you.

How will you pick the girls?

I'll post a poll and let community members decide. There will be rounds devoted to all 8 BSC regulars (Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, Jessi, and Abby) and to Shannon; I'll let the comm decide if they want rounds devoted to groups of girls (siblings, parents, clients, other SMS students.)

But the BSC books are kids' books! Writing fic (especially gay fic) about them is gross!

I'm sorry you feel that way. There's a vibrant and happy BSC girlslash community here in fandom, and I'm happy to be part of it.

That said, porn will never be a requirement (though it's certainly okay!) and I'll do my best to ensure that no one has to write outside her (or his) comfort zone.

What will the schedule look like?

This community will be run on a two-week cycle.

Week 1-
Wednesday or Thursday: poll is posted
Friday: sign-ups go up
Sunday: sign-ups close and assignments are sent.

Week 2-
Monday-Saturday: writing, writing, writing!
Sunday: fics are due.

How does a ficathon work?

Basically, everyone who participates requests a story and provides some information about the kind of thing they'd like to write. Using my superior secretary skills, I'll look through my record book and make assignments. You will be writing for someone else, and someone else will be writing for you. An excellent summary of the ficathon process, complete with advice, can be found here, in karabair's journal.

I don't have access to the BSC books and don't really remember them, but would like to participate anyhow. Can I?

I'd love for as many people as possible to participate. One of the joys of BSC fic is taking details from canon and reinventing them in a new framework. On the other hand, much BSC fic (especially of the shippy variety) is set post-series, and detailed knowledge of canon is not required. Many local libraries have BSC collections, and you can read one or two books in an afternoon if you need a refresher course.

I hope that people making requests based on obscure, late-series characters and those whose memory of the series is "oooh, shiny and gay!" will co-exist in this community; I'll always do my best to make sure everyone gets an assignment she can write and that everyone receives a story.

I hope this covers everything. If you have any more questions, just ask!
