For
thepinkclinker who requested springtime and sports.

This is my first attempt at sharing any of my writing since I'm usually too embarassed...  i tried my best... and hope you like it! :|

I watched as she skillfully maneuvered the soccer ball down the field while I sat on the sidelines waiting for my turn to go in.

I had tried out for the soccer team for reasons that I didn’t even really comprehend. There weren’t really any other major spring sports for girls, and the softball team at the high school played during the fall. Softball was my main sport (I even coach a softball team for little kids), and soccer wasn’t. I wasn’t one of the best players, but I played hard and the coach liked that. However, it didn’t give me that much playing time.

Still, somehow, sitting here watching her play, I didn’t mind. Her dark curls bouncing above her head in a ponytail as she flew down the field.

I could no longer deny to myself that the main reason I wanted to play soccer was to be closer to her. I tried to convince myself that it was just because I needed something to keep my busy in the spring.  Since the baby-sitters club had broken up at the end of eighth grade, I found myself mostly alone.  Mary Anne had started going out with Pete Black, and had moved in with his slightly nerdy but well liked crowd.

Stacey had become a cheerleader which was no surprise to anyone. She proved she had the moves when she tried out in eighth grade but got gypped out of being one, so she came back full force freshman year.  She was now dating a freshman in college that no one knew.

Claudia was still doing art, and doing worked doing backstage for the plays and musicals that the high school put on. She had turned into a theatre nerd and was happily single.

With Mallory still at boarding school, and Jessi away in New York City dancing, that just left Abby and me.  Abby was a full fledged jock playing volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and soccer in the spring.

In eighth grade we were friends, but we weren’t that close. She was the new girl in the club and the school, and she was the only one who dared challenge me in my authority as club president, and it drove me nuts. She had a wacky sense of humor that went along with her hair, and I really didn’t know what to make of her. When she dropped out of the club to make room for sports, we got along better than I would have thought. We’re both strong willed and hard headed.

She had come up to me the day before tryouts for the team saying that I should try out because they needed some players to make up for the ones that had graduated the year before.

I told her I’d think about it, but the next day I found myself lacing up a pair of cleats and heading down to the soccer field for tryouts.

“You came.” She said flashing me a smile.

“Yeah,” I said, not sure why that just at that moment I felt extremely self conscious.  Me. Kristin Amanda Thomas was getting butterflies in my stomach.

That was about a month ago. Now I felt myself drawn to her long muscular legs as she jogged down the field.

When the game (which we won) was over, and after we told the other team good game, Abby came up to me and asked if I wanted to go over to her house for a little while.  Anna had plans with Shannon, and their mother was going to be working late as usual. Against my better judgment I agreed to go.

I drove home and parked my car, stuck my head in the door and told whoever was there that I was heading over to Abby’s and walked the two houses down. Abby was standing on her porch waiting for me when I arrived and we went inside.

We sat at the kitchen table eating chips and dip, and gulping down cans of soda just talking. It was nice, I hadn’t talked to anyone like that really since Mary Anne and I drifted apart sometime during our freshman year. Abby was still the same cracking jokes and laughing at herself… and I couldn’t’ help but feel drawn to her.

As I got up to throw my can away I felt her presence behind me.  I turned around and looked up at her and she then hesitated and leaned down and kissed my lips softly. I lost my breath for a moment and as she pulled away she looked slightly embarrassed.

I looked at her and an instant later I kissed her again… and everything was perfect.
