Conference Day

Mar 26, 2009 11:49

Our day started early this morning, with just a quick breakfast, before we headed up the Sorrento Hilton for the start of our conference - the 5th Annual Symposium on Diabetes and Pregnancy.  We registered and got our name badges and our cool conference backpacks, and then went to set up our poster.  There was a hall full of boards for posters of all different categories, from basic science to clinical practice.  Our poster was in the "new technologies" section, and was a review of the outcomes of our 20 patients we've treated in the past two years with insulin pumps during pregnancy.  We discovered that ours was unique of all the other posters about pumps - there was only one other poster that had more than 10 patients reviewed, and we were the only ones who had type 2 diabetics and gestational diabetics (those who developed diabetes in pregnacy) included instead of just type 1 diabetics.  So we hung our poster and then headed out for the conference.

Me and Our Poster

The lectures were good, but scheduled to start at 8am and last until 8pm.  While most of the talks were really good, by 4pm our attention was failing.  So after the last break (all the poster viewing times were during breaks) we packed up our poster and left.  There were 1200 attendees from around the world, so we're pretty sure no one missed us.

We dropped our stuff off at our hotel and did some more exploring and a little more shopping. Sorrento is such a cute little town, with narrow, cobblestoned streets and inviting shops.  Lemon and orange trees are everywhere.  Some trees are just growing along the side of the road, while others are part of small family orchards.

Lemons

For dinner tonight we decided to try the restaurant next door to our hotel.  At breakfast this morning one of the other hotel guests had recommended we try it.  It was such a good recommendation!  The inside was lovely, with flowers and plants growing everywhere, and a huge bustling staff tending to the mix of tourists and local customers.  I had more delicious wine, we tried the fried zucchini blossoms, which were yummy.  For dinner I had a pasta dish that was incredible.  I can't remember what it was called, but it was made of short, fat, hollow noodles filled with mozzarella and covered in a rich tomato sauce.  And the limocello afterwords (the restaurant's own creation) was a perfect ending.  Well, almost perfect, because we then had to go across the street to our favorite gelato shop to get our daily helping of gelato.
