You are absolutely correct about a sign of good historical fiction being that the reader wanting to do further research. It ignites something more in your imagination. I don't think this is the only sign. I think it's perfectly acceptable to read historical fiction just like any other type. I just haven't been able to do that myself. :)
I haven't read a lot of historical fiction, but I doubt that I would notice any inaccuracies. My friends that I discuss sci-fi with know that I miss plot holes you could drive a truck through :-). I don't know enough about history or science to pick up on inaccuracies. As long as the storyteller has plucked my emotional strings, then I enjoy the story. If the story is bad enough for me to notice the plot holes, then you know the author really screwed up!
