Rien was coming over. She was coming over, and they were going to watch a movie. And eat dinner. It was like a date, even more like a date than going to the phaser range and teaching her how to shoot

Rien had used the time to paint her nails. Just a pretty pink. Nothing slutty like a Romulan whore or anything. Her mother had taught her better than that.
When the door opened, she smiled up at Travis. He looked a little red in the face, not like angry but maybe he had gotten some bad news or rushed to meet her.
That was actually kind of a nice thought.
He moved to let her in and Rien surveyed the room out of self-protective habit. It was almost identical to the room she shared with Chapel except it was... messy. And a little smelly. Like it didn't get a lot of air.
It wasn't too bad though and she was being polite.
She smoothed her nervous hands down the front of her skirt. "How was your shift?"
"I haven't," Harris said. "Maybe I should try it."
His voice was a little vague - he was concentrating, too, even though he'd seen the movie before. He'd picked it for a reason. It was a good movie, and drew him in every time.
Especially the part with the cannons in the snow, but that was a ways off.
Rien was a little bit engrossed herself. Enough that when the canons fired and the avalanche started that she jumped and clutched at the pillow in her lap and then grabbed for Travis's hand because Mulan was hurt and they really hadn't been watching for very long so of course she had to get better but still. It was a very tense moment. And he'd said he didn't mind if she touched him.
Her hand was really soft. He wanted to sort of squeeze it a little, let her know that he was there, but he was afraid that he'd scare her, so he didn't. Still, it was nice just to have her holding on like that.
He didn't squeeze her hand or try to hold on or anything so Rien left her hand where it was, holding on to his. It was nice. It was actually very nice and she liked it. He had callouses on his fingers, probably from something he did in Security, maybe shooting. The question distracted her from the movie a little bit.
"Travis, what do you DO in Security? I've never really known."
"Me? Or security in general?" He scratched his ear with his free hand. "I guess that's kinda the same question. Uh. When we're on the ship we sort of keep order, you know, break up fights and escort people to the brig or the agony booth or whatever. When we're on an away mission we keep everybody else from getting killed, mostly."
"I like being a nurse. And Bones takes care of us." She sounded just a little dreamy when she mentioned Bones. "But you should be careful. It would be sad if you got hurt. Though then I guess I could take care of you."
"I wouldn't mind, then." Not that he minded too terribly much even without a pretty nurse seeing to him after. As long as nothing got broke and any bleeding stopped pretty quick on its own, Harris figured he was good to go, most times.
"It's good you like it. Being a nurse. We gotta have you guys in sickbay or the whole ship'd just die of gangrene or whatever."
"Sulu had gangrene. Well, it wasn't really gangrene. Bones says it's some bacteria that doesn't have a name yet. He'll probably write a paper on it." Her nose wrinkled and she leaned over closer to kind of whisper. "He smelled awful when he came to Sickbay the other day."
"I think he's probably dead now. He wasn't when he came in last week though." She flicked a look at the paused movie on the screen because changes in circumstances always made her a little bit nervous but Travis was still letting her hold his hand without trying to grab her so maybe it was all okay and he just wanted to talk.
"He got infected because he didn't follow doctor's orders. Pretty much ever."
"Sulu was a douche," Harris said, with a dismissive shrug.
Sulu'd thought he was real smart, and if you thought that and weren't, well. You died, fast or slow. You had to either know your limits - which Harris prided himself on doing, personally - or actually be a fucking genius. Like Chekov. And even he walked a thin, thin line.
Harris preferred his lines thick and heavily armed. Even if that didn't make metaphorical sense.
"I can follow orders. Mostly. Bones tells us what to do - well, mostly he yells. It's not so bad, though."
Personally, Rien agreed about Sulu. She'd been the assisting the first time Bones had needed to fix Sulu and the man had done nothing but yell and cuss, fit to rival her boss, which was saying something. And Bones meant it differently.
"I like Captain Uhura, though. She's always been so nice to us."
"She's something," Harris agreed. It didn't seem appropriate, somehow, to mention that his best buddy was her man. Or whatever. Though maybe everybody knew anyways.
"I get yelled at a lot. But partly that's because there's just a lot of yelling when you're shooting stuff. Everybody gets real excited."
Rien was still holding onto his hand. Maybe she'd let him kiss her later. Usually that was the sort of thing you just kinda did, but he guessed he should ask first, since she didn't like surprises like that. But he couldn't think of any kind of way to make that question sound okay.

They'd been talking over the movie for a while. Harris tapped the remote and paused it. They could finish watching in a little bit.
