Torchwood came for my soul

Having watched the "Dead Man Walking/Day in the Death" duology (Torchwood 2x07-08), I still think this is some of the most affecting, and perhaps among the best, sci-fi TV I've ever seen -- questionable special effects and occasionally questionable writing choices aside, it's just good. I think it might be the best Came Back Wrong story I've ever ( Read more... )

This arc hurt so much I try not to think about it, to be honest! But Burn Gorman had a big role in season 4 of The Expanse, which we have just finished (many months after every other fan of the show), and it made me think about what an amazing job he did there. He does a very different amazing job in The Expanse, except that he's again, well, an asshole.

At one point, I loved Torchwood utterly, and then I felt that it betrayed me again and again: the end of that season, and then "Children of Earth."

Torchwood icon!! (My paid LJ account lapsed, so I don't have my Owen icon over here anymore.)

Yeah, this show, and his arc, absolutely broken my heart, in a way few shows ever have. I'm dealing with it much better on the rewatch because I know where to stop and just try to pretend nothing on the show happened after a certain point.

Rewatching, I feel like it's even more obvious that the show did a sudden hard swing from a goofy team sci-fi show to Prestige TV, and you can pinpoint the exact point when it happened. It's really annoying because it's such a fun team sci-fi show up to that point, with such good interpersonal dynamics, and then they blew it all up.

Oh, about his Expanse character - I sort of vaguely knew that he was in it, but didn't know anything about it other than I'd osmosed that he's a villain.

Can you tell me, without spoilers, if he's more like an asshole with redeeming qualities, of the Owen variety, or just flat-out evil?

Well, it might be a spoiler even to say it, because I held out hope for at least a couple of episodes that he would have redeeming qualities, but he really was pretty much just evil.

(I bought a lifetime account at LJ when they were having a sale at one point, figuring people would never leave it!)

Awwww, dammit! I was afraid of that. I look forward to seeing him anyway, but I still want him in another sympathetic recurring role someday. (If I can't have Owen again, can I at least have him playing someone vaguely Owen-like?)

I remember thinking very strongly about buying one too. I decided not to, but honestly, even though most people have left now, I feel like I got enough fun and use out of LJ that it would have been worth it if I had. And I'd still have my icons!
