Hee! Of all the endings, I think I'm leaning a little bit towards that one at the moment. Except it'll probably mean writing another 20,000 words after I get them out of the wilderness, as opposed to just being able to stop ...
Im also interested to hear about what would be (substantially) WORSE than being chased through the wilderness by zombies...it would have to be pretty damned dystopian! Not that I don't see it being plausible, just, wow...very very icky.
Ha. This was also asked on the DW side, and I actually do have something in mind if I go that route. Both the survivors and the "zombies" are AIs, on a world long since abandoned by humanity. Having them wander into a domed city full of humans, who see them as subsentient slaves, would certainly qualify as dystopia ...
I personally would prefer a mix of 1 and 2. They survive but don't get let into the city too fast. After all, the people in the safe city don't know if anyone in your group is infected or not...

They manage to cure the zombie plague....in the sense that noone can catch zombism from a fresh bite. This leaves previous victims to be dealt with/imprisoned.
Bonus: they cure the plague. How does one character deal with who he killed/infected as a zombie.
