I agree with you on 'The Great Gatsby'. Also 'Tuesdays with Morrie' was a bit lame..

Oh man, I wish I'd had the option of taking a Scifi Lit class at any point in my academic career! Out of curiosity, what were some of the other books assigned? (Curious, because Dune obviously wasn't one of them, and so many people act like it's the gold standard of the genre.)

Yeah, my instructor specifically said we were going to avoid Dune, but I forget for which reasons (probably something about how it was so mainstream). While I'm sure there were more to the list, here are the ones which I pulled from my bookshelf remembering they were in our class:

  • Small Gods (Terry Pratchett)
  • A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula K. Le Guin)
  • The Left Hand of Darkness (Le Guin)
  • Solaris (Stanislaw Lem)
  • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Philip K. Dick - this book was the inspiration for Blade Runner)
  • selections from Reave the Just, and Other Tales (Stephen R. Donaldson)

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the class. :-)

hot damn, you read Small Gods? I'm a wee bit obsessed with Pratchett myself. I wish I got to read him in class.

I did me a list too. There were a lot of Utopian Lit books on there, eh?

And sorry, I hadn't gotten around to friending you yet... I just started this dang thing, and I barely have any time to work on it. Usually I'm posting when I should be working.
