So I’m caught up on Doctor Who! Fun and interesting and emotional, but…

The last two-parter really crystallised my issues with Amy’s writing this season, and this episode only compounded them.

SO MUCH 'THIS' THAT I MIGHT ACTUALLY BREAK MY CAPSLOCK KEY.

(And someone needs to fic that ASAP. The scene with Amy and the Doctor and the spin off of awesome, actually.)

I've never thought Amy was a particularly strong woman. She's always been pretty reactionary and useless. The baby thing is a tough one because when there's a baby, SOMEONE has to be stuck in a room guarding it instead of killing baddies. It makes sense that Amy would be the one doing that; it fits her rather passive characterization, and frankly, she's not the one wearing armor with 2,000 years of Roman Centurion experience to fall back on. It would have been infinitely amusing, though, if she'd taken up the Sontaran on his nursing offer, but I can understand why she didn't. All that said, I really don't like baby plots. Having one on the TARDIS is and always has been a terrible idea and I wish Moffat hadn't gone there.

I disagree with that - in season one, Amy was curious and adventurous. She actively contributed to the plots. I want the Amy who couldn't resist Keep Out Signs and picked locks. I want the Amy who communed with space whales and empathised with androids, who ran down vampires and shouted down the dream lord.

If they had to have a baby plot, which I vehemently agree in my dislike of, it could have at least involved an exception of passivity rather than a rule, and Amy could have promised Melody that both of her parents would be coming for her.

What really struck me as pathetic is when they come for the baby and Amy just stands there crying please no. Dude, if that were me? Particularly with raging new mama hormones? Baby in one arm, knife or whatever the fuck blunt or projectile object I could get my fucking hands on in the other. And this especially hurts me deep in my soul since I watched it mere hours after finishing Carpe Jugulum, in which Magrat, when backed into a corner with her newborn baby by an invading vampire, calmly shuts the vampire up in a jar with garlic, throws it in a well, and then goes to soothe her crying baby with a rattle. Remember that time Amy instinctively bashed a Cyberhead against a wall multiple times? Yeah.

"If you can’t include Rory without making Amy passive, without damn near shoving her in the background in some cases, then I’d rather not have Rory ( ... )

"This trio is not as fun as it could've been. Not at all. Thus far this season, the married TARDIS has turned out to be a basis for taking away a lot of stuff I liked rather than adding to it."

Pretty much. I tend to enjoy TARDIS trios, and I thought I'd enjoy this one despite my issues with Rory, but - not so much, no. Apparently only one companion can be active and impressive at a time, and it's going to be the man.

"Jesus fucking Christ."

BASICALLY. I mean - I would love the idea of the Doctor's fated enemy falling for him instead because I'm a sucker for that shit, but like this? Ew, no ( ... )

I think it has something to do with them being married. Apparently we can't have a couple on the TARDIS without being constantly reminded of this like we'd forgotten. Everyone seems to be so busy driving Rory's characterization toward proving he's a good husband that Amy has to be driven into helplessness so that he can take care of her. And Amy seems only to get two settings: glib and victim. And if she is taking action, it's usually because she's worried about Rory. Who in turn you don't ever need to worry about because nothing ever happens to him that can't be undone, he is the magic man. When the wedding was happening last year, I was worried Amy's story would end up defined by the Grow Up Settle Down cliche, but I thought it meant she'd leave the TARDIS to be domestic, and that pissed me off. Turns out the same thing's happening anyway, but she's still around for me to have to watch. *sigh* As a personal dynamic, they're doing a ( ... )

*is Sarah* I be in disguise... ...because I'm too lazy to logout and log back in. So.

I just wanted to say the phrase "CRIME-FIGHTING VICTORIAN INTER-SPECIES LESBIANS" made me laugh so hard I spit my coffee out. I have no clue why I did this, but now there's coffee spilled everywhere.

Thanks a lot Ashley. :P :D
