Making the world a better place

I confess that I am not among those who want to make the world a better place. They are so concerned about bettering it, constantly talking about it: so much work ahead, so many improvements to make... A better world to whom? To themselves? Do they actually know what is going to happen to them in a very short while, what kind of a better world ( Read more... )

And what casuistry would not people use to proclaim that their personal vision of Great Public Good is universal... Polio vaccine has been developed independently and it would be developed even by the most committed individualist sick with the thirst for fame and self-aggrandizement (which is not a totally inaccurate description of Jonas Salk). You better ask yourself why the world improvers have not developed a vaccine for flu or AIDS. What a world of good that would make! Alas, virology has little to do with individual desire to make the world a better place. It has more to do with knowledge and thinking about this world.
