Мне кажется, что solomon2 прав в том, что за (пусть европейским и относительно недавним) "рыцарским" инстинктом стоит именно такая рационализация -- и даже немного странно, что Вы с ним спорите. Представим себе менее страшную ситуацию: передо мной столкнулись и упали с велосипедов два человека -- мужчина и женщина. Я стану сначала помогать женщине, и если нужно это как-то объяснять -- то потому что "по умолчанию" предполагаю, что мужчина скорее справится сам, т.е. женщине помощь более необходима. Аналогично кажется, что инстинктом будет сначала протянуть руку тонущей женщине, а потом -- мужчине.

Когда Вы спасали детей из-под перевернутой байдарки, у Вас, вероятно, не было особого выбора: Вы сначала вытаскивали того, который был ближе. Это другая ситуация.

Как хорошо, что тогда всё обошлось.

Because I doubt that THIS is the rationalization of "ladies first." This is not the "instinctive behavior." You do what everyone told you to do, what is expected from you by the others and yourself. Otherwise we have to admit that the talmudic rabbis have different instincts from the rest of humanity, and the the meaning of "instinct" gets watered down. Do you really know WHY you are helping this damsel? This is chivalric code. Chivalry is a concept of nobility of the soul. Ladies are not valued for their physical weakness, but for their special role in acknowledging the good and virtuous works. Damsels in distress are helped first because of this immediate reward and the spiritual blessings coming with it that help trhe knight to accomplish more good. So you have yet another rationale who should be saved first, in this case based on the tradition of early medieval Christianity. There is nothing natural or instinctive about it. It is someone's elaborated code of behavior and complex ethics backing it up. The idea that ladies are

Да, я это и имел в виду, но, наверное, недостаточно четко высказался: я говорил не о биологическом инстинкте homo sapiens, а о "культурном инстинкте", если так можно выразиться, -- "условном" инстинкте, привитым мне воспитанием и в конечном итоге европейской рыцарской культурой.

А вот насчет того, почему рыцарский кодекс велит помогать даме, Вы меня не убедили. По-моему, как минимум одной из причин является то, что они слабые и их нужно защищать. По крайней мере это представляется логичным. И кстати говоря, поскольку это объективный биологический факт (женщины слабее мужчин), то, возможно, тут есть что-то и от биологического инстинкта.

This is not a question of opinion, but scholarship. Why do not you find out for yourself? There are plenty of books on women in the Middle Ages, it being a popular topic. There are even more books on the history of chivalry. See for yourself if your guess is correct. You may also ask yourself why the same knight that raped a peasant girl without any great remorse was so keen on helping a damsel in distress.
