8 or 16GB though... those are REALLY small hard drives.

It's a lovely machine, but I'm waiting until the hard drive sizes are more accommodating to what I use an iPods for.

Yeah they are small compared to that 80 GB model you have. It's another annoying thing with Apple where they release a "new" (quoted in this case) product with limited features even though they don't have to. Yeah they don't want to gut their existing mainstream iPods that they are still selling, but that doesn't really make sense when this product could replace them.

I completely agree... why release this thing if it can't replace the iPod video?

Although, I'll be honest, I was REALLY happy when I found out how small the hard drive was since it meant that I hadn't just bought an expensive toy only to have it be replaced by something vastly superior mere weeks later. Yes, it was a selfish thing to be happy about, but you'd feel that way too if you just dropped around $200 on a product only to have it be completely revamped.

I wonder if the reason they have the hard drives so small is cost of production? That significantly larger hard drives that are small enough to fit in that iPhone shape might significantly raise the price of the machine? I know Apple doesn't like moving away from their established prices very much.

But, aren't the iPhone and the new iPod Touch the same size or bigger than the standard iPod?
