After his first encounter with the Heartless at Flynn, Shadow had received an anonymous letter that requested his services as an assassin, giving instructions on the selected target and where to go after his mission was accomplished. It was impossible for him to turn down due to the promised amount for the task given.
"I have sent you this because I need services from one of your caliber, at least according to your reputation. Alexandria is currently ruled by Queen Brahne, but I wish to change that. I ask that you make it your mission to kill Brahne. Do not be seen, do not be caught. This may sound an impossible task, but it is not. And of course there is a reward for doing so. Two million gil should suffice. If you wish to negotiate the price further, we can do so in Treno after the assassination. Simply go to the auction house and sit in the balcony seat. I will know when the deed is done and meet you there."
After reading the decorative elegant letter laced with gold one more time, he folded it back up and put it away. It wasn't easy to read given that he was at the outer wall of Alexandria, a far away torch his only source of light. The moon was hidden behind clouds in the night sky, more cover for him to use. He had been waiting for a good night to carry out the assassination. It had been the first time he had received someone asking him to remove someone of royal blood. Briefly he pondered what Edgar would think were he ever to find out. Now that he had tested his skills at the Festival of the Hunt and found himself to be back up to par, as well as Master of the Hunt along with a rare tetra card, it was time to go back to business as usual.
The ninja had been observing the guards and their patrols and change in shifts, he had been doing so since dusk. Patience had always been key in his trade. Now that he knew the coast was finally clear, he donned the nekode claws to his hands and began scaling the stone wall of the castle. He made no sound as he expertly slid the claws into the shallow gaps between each brick. Avoiding the torchlight he continued his climb. He periodically looked down to check for any guards, and was caught by surprise when he saw two guards heading towards each other below. Quickly he slid his way to the left, hiding on a hanging Alexandrian flag, his black clothing making it easy to overlook given how dark the night had been.
So far all he had seen were female guards, but below him was a male guard in full armor meeting one of the female guards wearing a green leotard raising the visor of her helmet. Since he was too far up to hear what they were saying, he could only assume that they were meeting secretly given that they were both looking about warily, as he had done, avoiding detection. Still as the stone behind the flag, Shadow waited, his muscles starting to tire from being in the same position. Finally they left, waiting a few extra moments after they had gone from his sight, he began climbing once more. When he had reached the top, he waited before even looking over the edge. Listening for footsteps, breathing or talking. When he was sure all was quiet, his hands grabbed hold of the ledge and he hoisted his body over in motion, the tabi on his feet made no noise and he crouched down to survey the castle. Moving to the door in the corner end of the castle that lead inside, he held his ear against it and immediately heard talking that was getting louder. With little to no time to react, the door swung open and two female guards walked out onto the roof of the castle.
"Yeah, I don't why she's trying to keep it a secret, as if anyone would care." said one guard to the other as she closed the door behind them. "I know, but maybe she's embarrassed about something." the other offered. "Embarrassed about dating a Pluto Knight." she scoffed and the other laughed. As they walked away onto the roof, their new shift just starting.
After they had left, Shadow emerged from clinging once more to the outside of the outer wall. Entering the castle, slowly and cautiously closing the door behind him found the interior to be well lit. He quickly made his way down the stairs and passed a painting of what had to have been the ugliest person he had ever seen in his life. Judging from the crown atop her head, it had to have been Queen Brahne. As for what she was holding, it could have been a cat or some kind of animal. A clattering sound came from not far away and he quickly hid behind a suit of armor.
"No, I'm serious! There was this huge black spider on the flag outside the wall!" said one armored, and Shadow now knew as a Knight of Pluto, to the other. "I didn't wanna tell her because she'd have freaked out and left, and we never get a chance to see each other." to which the other just shook his head "Your eyes are playing tricks on you, there's no spider monsters anywhere near Alexandria." said the other one as they walked across the floor, the boot clanking noisily. "I hope you're right. And are you sure we should be going to the kitchen for snacks? What if Captain Steiner finds us. he asked looking his shoulder. "Stop worrying will you, we need to keep our strength up."
After they had gone into the kitchen and the door closed behind them, Shadow continued his way through the castle. There were not many guards within the castle itself, most of them were patrolling outside. He turned the door handle as gently as possible, but it still made a loud click, which caused him to immediately slide into the room, closing the door behind him. He doubted that no one was alerted and waited at the door listening for the running of the guards or the shouts or calls that were sure to follow. After a moment's silence there was a sound that actually caused the ninja to flinch, a horn had to have gone off alerting others he was there. But again, a moment later the same sound came and he realized it was coming from behind him. Shadow turned to see the large figure of Queen Brahne behind the see through four poster bed. It wasn't a horn that was going off, it was her snoring.
No wonder it was still quiet everywhere else.
Retrieving a short straight blade from his waist, the skilled assassin crouched and stealthily made his way across the large floor under the line of sight of the windows to the bed where he stood up again. Since volume wasn't clearly an issue as she continued her loud semi-deafening snore, Shadow saw fit to make a quick and easy strike through the heart. He raised the ninja-to over his head blade down, carefully lining up his target so it would be fast and painless. As painless as death could be anyway.
