Algren's Office [Saturday]

Oct 03, 2009 10:24

For all of the questions that Algren had been dreading about his class since he'd learned of the influx of parents this weekend, what he had woken up this morning worried the most about was, what in the world was he supposed to wear? He had all of one modern outfit, worn until it was more or less threadbare now (thus putting his interest in this ( Read more... )

Amanda had her mental list of all of Spock's teachers, including that one he didn't want her to talk to; maybe Professor Algren could tell her where to find his co-teacher, though. It would never occur to her to be embarrassed by any subject being taught to her son.

"Professor Algren? I'm Spock's mother." She smiled warmly and offered a handshake. "Amanda Grayson. It's a pleasure to meet you."

And, switching easily back to English, Algren offered her a somewhat relieved smile. If she was from the future, then it would in theory be quite alright that he was from the past. Right?

"I haven't been, in this century," he replied, nodding his head faintly. "I'm actually here from over a century in the past, myself."

"Really. Oh, that must have been an adjustment for you," Amanda said, eyes studying him with curiosity and sympathy. "I've read enough history to know how extreme the changes were over the 20th Century. This island must have been quite a shock for you. But you've stayed? For over a year now, you said."

"Nearly a year," he corrected, gently. "Though time spent in the past again would make it over a year since my arrival, I suppose."

It was easier to not dwell on that much too thoroughly.

"I admit, yes, it was a shock. But most of the surprises were pleasant ones. I'll adjust in time, or I'll leave for the era in which I belong, when it's my time to do so."

"Well, I wish you the best of luck either way, Professor Algren. I do hope Spock takes another course with you." Amanda was feeling a great deal more sanguine now that the first of her concerns had been put to rest, and Spock was doing better socially. And his teacher seemed a very pleasant, intelligent man, aware of the difficulties a student from elsewhere might face, on both the time and planetary fronts. "Could you tell me, though, is there some difficulty with Professor Kirk? Spock attempted to gloss over the fact that this course had two teachers to me. And recommended I speak with you, instead of both you and your co-teacher."

And here was where Algren had to bite down his knee-jerk, 'IT IS KIRK'S FAULT' reaction. With great difficulty.

But somehow, he managed.

"I imagine Spock's reasoning on that front probably had a good deal to do with Professor Kirk's somewhat unorthodox methods of teaching," he replied, offering her a slight, almost apologetic smile. "He's particularly enthusiastic about the subject matter," because it was sex, "and he'll go through great lengths to make certain that the students have a clear grasp on it in whatever manner he believes is most effective."

"Ah. Emotional, maybe?" Amanda asked, smiling ruefully. "Maybe a little impulsive? Very human?"

"Very human," Algren agreed. "Undeniably so."

That was possibly the nicest way he was ever, ever going to be able to put it.

"That would do it." Oh, Spock. Amanda shook her head, amused. "Spock would never say he doesn't approve of an instructor, but avoiding him would be his most natural impulse. He'll get used to him. I hope." She finished her tea, and put down the cup and saucer, rising to her feet. "It's been so nice chatting with you, Professor. I shouldn't take up all your time, though. And I have to track down the rest of Spock's teachers."

Please, please please, don't hunt down Jim. Nathan managed to remain diplomatic and to refrain from traumatizing at least one parent of one of his students, please, don't find Jim.

That silent prayer said, he nodded slightly, rising to his feet again.

"Thank you for the visit," he replied. "Should you have any other concerns regarding your son, please, feel free to contact me."
