Snap!

I'm really showing my advanced age here, but what on earth does "Oh snap!" mean? When would one of you use it? Or... when would one of the Fellowship members use it ( Read more... )

I'm horrified at hte idea of any of the fellowship members using "oh, snap!"

:D

But i suppose I could picture Legolas saying it if Gandalf, for example, said something insulting to Gimli. Or something.

But what does it mean? What would Legolas be trying to convey?

(I do love the idea of Legolas defending Gimli against Gandalf.)

Me too, but I think "oh snap" is more like...a slam on someone...

Don't know where "oh snap" comes from but I always thought it meant the same as snapping your fingers, like you've forgotten something. I don't know anyone that actually says it or uses it.

I could only picture Sam using it if he'd forgotten one of his cooking items or forgotten the salt or something. lol I guess that shows my age too.

I've heard people using it recently, in RL and on TV, but the current-slang meaning of it is eluding me.

Ah yes! The joys of those who work 9 to 5, Monday to Froday kind of jobs!
It is nice to have a house husband, we still go grocery shopping together though!
I have no ides what "Oh,snap" means, will ask daughter, she will probably know.
Don't try to do too much at once.
It is cold and gray out today, a good day to stay home and write and watch T.V.!
Happy Starsday,
Lynda

It's a wonderful day to stay home and putter. Brrrrr.

Oh yes, see if daughter can explain this new phrase!

"Oh snap!" is an exclamation of disbelief, usually when something bad has happened. "Oh snap! I can't believe I forgot my homework." It's kind of like saying, "Oh rats!" I think it's pretty modern slang so you probably wouldn't use it in a Fellowship story unless you're doing a parody or something.

So it would be like...

"My son, I hate to break this to you, but your name isn't really Estel. It's Aragorn"

"Oh snap! I just ordered saddlebags with my name on them. What should I do with them?"

"Keep them! No one should know your name is Aragorn, anyway."

"Whew."

The way I've heard my 20something daughter use it, it's for when someone scores a verbal point against another, like Claudia's Gandalf-Gimli-Legolas example. Legolas would be expressing admiration for Gandalf's jab against Gimli. You can also use it for your own verbals successes, like snapping your finger in someone's face and saying "Ha! Gotcha!"

Thanks! You must hear a lot of interesting expressions being around a 20something. :)

Yes, this is exactly how my son uses it - admiration for a verbal point scored. Gandalf would say to Grima, "You have no more power here, be gone!" and Eomer would say, "Oh snap! Why didn't I think to do that months ago?!!"
