I really liked this story. And how like Sam to while away the waiting time by cooking. Your Sam and Rose are so sweet, and I love the midwife as well.

I've seen several Irish Stew recipes, but this one is very different than any of them. I will definitely need to try it out. Sounds like it would be a good one for the good old Crock Pot!

How beautifully you described Sam's fear and anxiety here! The few hints that something was going wrong with the birth were beautifully inserted - we feared it was foreshadowing and our anxiety level ratcheted up accordingly. Up to your usual excellent standards!
