Three Current Series that Intrigue Me

Mar 12, 2011 13:33

I'm not sure what it is that make certain storylines 'work' for me, why they're something that intrigues me and makes me want to think and talk about them.  At any rate the three that interest me most at the moment (in no particular order).

Being Human

I'm really enjoying this plot.  It's chewy.  Those who watched last season know that Mitchell did ( Read more... )

Everybody keeps telling me to watch Fringe, so I broke down last night and requested the first season through our intra-library loan system. (I have a feeling that this show might be very difficult to understand if not taken from the beginning)

First season is quite slow and (honestly, it didn't hold me) but having heard that it improved a lot I watched the whole series on DVD last summer and it does improve a great deal.

Being Human has always had that underlying subtext that vampirism is addiction
The original idea was for an addict, an agoraphobic and someone suffering from ADHD to be flatmates. Then at some point inspiration struck and it was changed to a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf. Hence the clear metaphors, esp for Mitchell.

Am loving it for the same reasons you are, btw. And oh, Annie... I love Annie far, far too much for standing up for herself, and for doing The Right Thing.

I haven't really been able to see Annie as agoraphobe though. I think at some point it must have shifted over to co-dependent/abusive relationships/over-giver.

*nods* Which, given what Mitchell is, becomes especially apt.

because Whedon is an atheist

So people say but I've never believed it. He comes over, in his writing, as a Young Earth Creationist and thus either a Christian or the most badly-educated atheist of modern times.

Heh. I totally see that interpretation.

However, in his 'defense' from what I've gathered from watching his shows, he just really, really sucks at science... and history.

Fringe is my favorite current show, and if it doesn't get renewed for next year I'm going to be miserable.

OMG, Being Human is so magnificent -- last week was staggering, stunning, amazing; I am eager to see what happens tomorrow!

And Fringe's alternate universe is so amazingly subtly different -- tiny things and yet it must have diverged so long ago (throw away line: "Who's Andrew Jackson?" Does this mean the Civil War didn't happen? They have a black man on their $20 bill...) -- and obviously, too, the Hindenburg didn't crash.

I had the same question about the Civil War. Although I think part of Jackson's claim to fame was the 'Indian uprisings' in the Georgia (now Alabama) (Which weren't so much an uprising as a family feud between groups that had intermarried).

I like Being Human's bravery.

Of course, that could take it back even further -- how WAS the North American continent taken? Were there Indian uprisings? One of the reasons I ponder the Civil War question is the black president on their $20 -- perhaps in the Alt!Verse Jefferson and the Declaration committee prevailed in debate and slavery WAS struck down once the colonies won?

(I love alternate universes. I could ponder them for ages.)

Being Human is perhaps the bravest show EVER. Makes all the rest of them look like complete amateurs (up to and including RTD's "bold" moves in Torchwood: Children of Earth. It's not just killing characters that makes something powerful, RTD...).
