On A First Name Basis: Luke Snyder and Reid Oliver - As The World Turns

As The World Turns is a 54-year-old US soap opera set in the fictional town of Oakdale, Illinois, telling the story of the town’s various citizens and intertwining clans, focusing especially on the Hughes and Snyder families. It’s one of the longest running shows in history, though sadly it’s going off the air in September.

The Brat: Luke Snyder

Luke was born and raised in Oakdale, right in the heart of the extensive Snyder clan. He’s a legacy character, born in the middle of the classic soap love triangle of his mother Lily Walsh, his mafioso biological father Damian Grimaldi, and his adoptive father Holden Snyder.

In 2006, he came out as gay as a teenager; in 2007, he met his long-time boyfriend Noah Mayer. Known together as ‘Nuke,’ the pairing quickly gained a large fan following and became one of the show’s most popular couples.

Luke is a product of both his rich businesswoman Walsh mother and horse farmer Snyder father. He’s emotional, loving, giving, loyal, and a total smart ass. He is also impulsive, spoiled, bossy, insecure, and self-destructive. He has struggled with alcoholism, and used to be a dedicated writer, but sadly seems to have lost the drive after getting expelled from college for rigging a school election. He runs a charitable foundation he created with his Grimaldi inheritance.

The Jerk: Reid Oliver

Dr Reid Oliver is one of the best neurosurgeons in the country; he was formerly based in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Oakdale. He was apparently raised in or near Cambridge, Massachusetts; he was a chess prodigy as a child, and has known he was gay since he was nine years old. His eating habits make the AMA cry.

Reid is rude, sarcastic, egotistical, arrogant, a general asshole, and does not care what anyone else thinks. He’s also a chess nerd and science geek, and gets all the best one-liners. His caustic tongue is a well-developed tool, and he uses it to great effect. He’s a work-a-holic who would do anything for his patients- including breaking the rules. He has dedicated his professional life to helping people, but on a personal level he alienates almost everyone he meets.

Story
In late 2009, Luke’s longtime boyfriend Noah was blinded in an accident. This medical crisis also put stress on the couple’s already strained relationship when Noah repeatedly pushed Luke away, desperate to prove his independence and irrationally blaming Luke for the accident. Luke became a clingy mess, desperate to both help Noah and save their relationship.

Enter Dr Reid Oliver, neurosurgeon extraordinaire.

From the first time Luke and Reid speak, it’s a clash of the control freaks. Luke is an entitled, spoiled brat who wants Reid to immediately make time for Noah. Reid is an arrogant asshole who sure as hell won’t.

Luke takes some very Grimaldi advice from his biodad Damian, and bluff-blackmails Reid into coming to Oakdale by threatening to have his medical license revoked for ‘ethical violations.’

Dr. Oliver, you made it. I cannot thank you enough.

We both know why I'm here. Let's not pretend that this is a normal consult.

Look, I -- I'm sorry. I just felt as if --

You felt that you could blackmail me. I'm curious, how much did it cost you to get dirt on me?

Dr. Oliver, I did not want to do it this way. But, you see --

What I see is the big, fat, silver spoon in your mouth that I hope you choke on. You have any idea how many people actually wait their turn to see me, who don't feel that they deserve to move to the front of the line just because they were born with blue blood in their veins? What makes you think that Mr. Mayer is more deserving of my time than anyone else?

Well, he's not, but he's the only person that I love who needs you.

Reid examines Noah, and declares that Noah’s treatment would be long and intensive, and he has no intention of doing it. He steals Luke’s car and gets in an accident. He’s arrested, and forced to stay in Oakdale for at least a month.

While stuck in Oakdale, Reid agrees to work at Oakdale Memorial Hospital under the supervision of town patriarch Dr Bob Hughes, who surprises everyone (including himself) by liking Reid. The only other person in town who similarly takes to Reid is Luke’s recently widowed cousin-by-marriage, Katie Peretti Snyder. She befriends Reid against his will, and offers him a place to stay with her and her infant son Jacob. This annoys Katie’s best friend Henry Coleman, as well as Bob Hughes’s son Chris Hughes, who went to medical school with Reid.

Meanwhile, Luke’s life generally sucks. He convinces Reid to treat Noah- only by agreeing to keep his distance. Noah moves out of their home, continuing to push Luke away, and Luke and Reid have several antagonistic run-ins (with sexual tension brewing just beneath the surface).

Far worse, Luke’s ‘bad dad’ Damian skips town to avoid a few pesky felony charges. A body identified as Damian turns up a short while later, which results in Luke’s ‘good dad’ Holden being arrested for the murder.

Of course, the Soap Gods then decree that Reid and Luke run into each other while Luke is holding the autopsy records. Despite himself, and while thoroughly mocking Luke for his ‘good dad/bad dad’ situation, Reid proves that Damian faked his death and framed Holden. Luke and Reid warm to each other a bit, for the first time.

Hey, listen- I know the guy did a lot of bad things, and probably hurt a lot of people, but Damian- he’s still your father.

That’s nice of you to say.

Yeah, it happens sometimes, as much as I try to prevent it.

Well, the truth is, I gave him so many chances. When he first found out I was gay, he tried to ‘fix’ me. I forgave him for that!

Must have been tough, having your father want to change you.

Well, he finally accepted me, so I gave him another chance.

Makes you wonder if the first change was real.

Yeah, it does. I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this.

Well, like I said, sometimes I’m a good guy in spite of myself.

Reid tells Luke he expects the favor to be returned- he wants Luke to testify on his behalf so the charges against him are dropped. Luke worries that Reid will just go back to Dallas and abandon Noah, but Reid snaps that he doesn’t abandon his patients- he’s taking Noah with him. Luke doesn’t like the idea of Noah leaving Oakdale, but agrees. He and Noah share a tender good-bye, which a rather jealous Reid sees.

Of course, now that Reid is free to leave Oakdale, Katie and Bob conspire to convince him to stay. Bob offers to build a state-of-the-art neurology wing to be run by Reid, and Katie manipulates Henry into donating the money for it. At the last moment, Reid can’t resist the temptation and agrees to stay.

When Noah tells Luke he isn’t leaving for Dallas after all, Luke is overjoyed and wants to take the chance to rebuild their relationship. Noah tells Luke he still needs space. The two break up.

In the aftermath of the break-up, Luke sees Reid attacked by the father of a dead patient, Annie Judd. Luke and Reid then have an intense, sexually-charged emotional encounter.

I made it very clear to the Judd’s that it was a risky operation, that it had a very small chance of success, but if we didn't operate, she was gonna die in the next couple of weeks.

And I take it the operation wasn't a success.

Well, it depends on what you call a success. I gave the girl a year of life that she wouldn't have otherwise had.

A year? But then why did the guy attack you? Why did he call you a murderer? And why didn't you defend yourself?

What would you have me do, Mr. Snyder, hmm? Fight him? Risk hurting my hands by punching him in the face? The guy lost his only daughter. She was 6 years old when she died. Can you even imagine that? You think that guy would have heard anything I had to say to him?

Do you know what I think?

No, and I don't particularly care to.

I think you feel you deserved that attack.

That shows me how little you actually understand.

Does it?

I'd make the same call again.

I know that. But you feel that you failed, and you can't handle that.

You don't know anything. Spare me the childish analysis.

And that's what makes you such a great doctor.

Now that he’s agreed to stay and build the new neurology wing, Reid finds out that there isn’t enough money for all his plans. He has no choice but to approach Luke and ask for a donation. Luke agrees- on the condition that he’s allowed a place on the Board. They also make sure to reassure each other that absolutely nothing is happening between them.

Luke and Reid begin working together. Their antagonism decreases at the same rate as the sexual tension increases. When they get caught in an elevator together, Reid has a panic attack due to his claustrophobia. Thrilled to see Reid so vulnerable, Luke mocks him at first, but then calms him down. He listens, fascinated, as Reid passionately talks about how much he loves neurology.

Reid then gets served a subpoena- he’s being sued for malpractice by Mr Judd, the man who attacked him. Luke attempts to offer an ‘out-of-court’ settlement, but Mr Judd accuses Reid of “sending your boyfriend to pay me off.” Luke is embarrassed, and later approaches Reid.

Well, consider it an apology.

Apology for what?

For speaking with Mr. Judd. I went behind your back, and I can only assume that you are probably pretty angry at me.

Why?

Because I butted my nose into your business. But just so you know, I -- I didn't go and speak with him because I -- I wanted to buy him off. I just -- I wanted to make that lawsuit just disappear.

Sounds like the same thing to me.

That sounds like something Noah would say.

He's a smart guy.

So you're not mad at me?

No. Actually, believe it or not, Mr. Snyder, I'm impressed.

Wow! I actually impressed you. Must be one for the record books.

You went to bat for me, however ill-conceived an attempt it might have been. It took guts, especially the way I've been treating you lately. I appreciate the gesture.

Well, I just wish it worked.

No, you tried. Thanks.

Dr. Oliver, I think we need to get something straight.

What's that?

You don't need to be impressed by me or -- or touched by me. I didn't go and speak to Mr. Judd for you.

Then why did you go to him?

For Noah. You're supposed to operate on him, and I was afraid that that wouldn't happen if you were tied up in a lawsuit for months and months.

I see. Well, let's just hope you didn't make things worse.

Yeah. Let's hope.

They continue working together, and flirt more and more. Katie realizes that Reid is attracted to Luke.

I do not have a thing for Luke Snyder. It’s his fault I’m stuck in this one-horse town to begin with.

Yeah, but a lot’s changed since then. You even decided to stick around this one-horse town.

Thanks to a very generous offer from Bob Hughes.

And some very generous help from Luke.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. The guy thinks he can buy and sell anything, including people.

And something tells me you don’t find that half as unattractive as you say you do.

The guy is completely hung up on Noah. As soon as Noah gets his eyesight back, they’re going to get back together.

And that doesn’t make you jealous at all?

Reid tries to push Luke and Noah back together- but Luke is upset and jealous when he finds out that Noah is casually dating another man, Richard.

Meanwhile, Mr. Judd files a complaint against Reid. The medical board opens an official investigation into Annie Judd’s death, which forces Bob to place Reid on suspension at the hospital. An upset Reid calls Bob a coward just as Luke happens along. Luke drags Reid away, and listens sympathetically as Reid unloads and then asks Luke for his help.

If I can't work, if I can't be in the operating room, I've got nothing.

But you yourself said that these charges were baseless.

Nobody's listening to me.

Well, then, get yourself a lawyer and fight for it. Make them listen to you and just -- just keep doing your job.

I can't do that, I‘m on suspension until the inquiry's closed.

Well, maybe that's a good thing.

Why, so I don't accidentally kill Noah, too?

No. So you can focus on getting these charges dropped.

I can't focus without my work. I haven't had more than a day off since I started med school. It's all I know. All I am is a doctor. Without it, I truly don't have anything else to hold on to. That's why, Mr. Snyder, I need you.

You need me? For what?

Your name, your money, your power -- all of it. I want to use it.

How?

Bribe somebody, blackmail them. I don't care. Just get me back in the operating room.

Well, the thing --

Look, I don't -- I know you don't care about me. Why would you? But if you can help me, I can help Noah. Isn't Noah the one man in this world you love enough to do anything for?

Here's the thing. I'm not gonna do anything illegal, immoral, or underhanded, even if it's for the right reason. I've done it before, and it never turns out the way I wanted it to, and I never feel good about myself afterwards. It makes me feel like I'm Damian Grimaldi's son.

You are Damian Grimaldi's son.

Yet you called me Mr. Snyder for a reason.

Well, I guess I'm out of luck then. A plea from a lovesick boyfriend to a medical board isn't gonna get me back in the operating room.

Probably not, but I think my grandmother might.

Come again?

She has friends in high places. I asked her for help, and because she loves me, she made a few calls.

To whom?

The Texas medical review licensing board. They scheduled an emergency hearing. So you have to go, and you have to fight well. But I guess you fighting and saying that you're right probably wouldn't be very hard for you, so -- this is the part where you say thank you.

Thank you.

Well, don't schedule any surgeries. We have a lot of work to do if we're gonna beat this.

"We"?

Yeah. I'm not letting you do this alone. I'm going to Texas with you.

While in Dallas working together, Reid and Luke grow closer.

Why do you do that? You came so close to being a real human with real emotions, and you just go right back to being a jerk.

You're wrong, Mr. Snyder. I'm always a jerk.

What's wrong with you?

What do you mean?

After all this time, you can't call me by my first name?

Oh, come on. I don't have time for --

No, no, no. My name is Luke. Just say it.

What does it matter what I call you?

Mr. Snyder is my father. I'm Luke.

Can I have my files back, please?

You call Noah by his first name.

He's my patient.

So?

It's a simple, well-defined relationship. It's patient-doctor. It's clear.

So what does that make us, then?

Hey, thanks, you know, for all this. Nobody's ever -- I mean, I know you're not doing it 'cause you care about my career. It's all for Noah's sake, but --

No. I -- I do care.

I wish I didn't care this much. This phone call - it's everything. It's Noah's surgery. It's my career. It's my life. What if they tell me I can't practice medicine anymore?

Well, we'll keep fighting. You're way too obnoxious to lie down and die.

I've worked my whole life to become what I am. I need my work. I need to experience those highs and lows every day. Without it, I'm -

Without it, you're going to be fine. You're more than a doctor.

What else am I?

You're an urban cowboy.

When Reid receives a call that his medical license has been reinstated, he happily kisses a stunned Luke.

image Click to view

I'm reinstated. Can you believe it? […]You have no idea what this means to me.

Actually, I think I do.

This never would have happened without you.

Dr. Oliver, you -- you do realize that you kissed me, right? And, I mean, that's okay. It's nothing to be embarrassed by. I mean, you're excited. You just got some really good news. But I think it would be kind of weird if we pretended that it didn't happen.

I know what I did. It had nothing to do with the phone call. I wanted to kiss you. I've been wanting to kiss you for a long time, Luke.

When they return to Oakdale, they spend time together and almost kiss again. Reid tells Luke he deserves more than what Noah has given him; and Luke tells Reid he’s flattered by Reid’s attraction to him. When Luke finds out that Noah’s surgery is scheduled for the next day, he accuses Reid of attempting to keep him and Noah apart by not telling him. Reid tells Luke he doesn’t play games like that.

You're acting like I'm the only one who knew the time and date of this surgery. Noah knew. Did he call you? Did he ask for your loving support?

No. But that's probably because he knew that I was in Texas with you and thought that you would tell me. But no, you were too busy trying to work me, trying to start something with me.

I thought we were starting something together.

You know, and I think that's a conflict of interest.

What is my sinister plan, huh? Keep him blind so he'll need you? Restore his sight so he wants you back?

Who knows? Who knows what you think? Because one minute, you're this pompous ass, and then the next minute, you're kissing me and making me feel like -

Feel like what?

I don't know.

Yeah, you do. How do I make you feel?

During Noah’s surgery, there are complications. When Reid tells Luke that Noah is in a coma and might have brain damage, a distraught Luke lashes out, accusing Reid of hurting Noah on purpose.

image Click to view

After all the time that you've spent with me, the care that I've given to the man that you told me that you loved, whether you're with him or not, you really think I have an investment in seeing him harmed or dead? That's who you think I am?

I have no idea what I think about you. I have no idea who you are.

Yes, you do. You can't look at me and tell me you don't know who I am.

Then how did this happen?

I wish -- I don't know.

You told me that you'd fix him. You promised. Noah couldn't handle being blind, so I gave him the one chance in the world he thought he had by bringing you here, and now this. And if he -- if he's never the same again, if he doesn't make it through this, then I --

You what?

I don't -- I can’t.

You can't what? You can't what, Luke?

Luke and Reid almost have sex, before a guilt-ridden Luke pulls back, though Reid assures him they’ve done nothing wrong, and Luke shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting to move on.

Later on at the hospital, they see each other again.

I know that you would never intentionally hurt a patient, no matter what was happening in your personal life. You can separate that and your work better than anyone I've ever seen.

Probably because for most of my career, I haven't had a personal life.

And I know that you would never do anything to hurt Noah, no matter what your feelings were.

You're not all that, Mr. Snyder.

No, I guess I'm not. He was the first person I was ever in love with.

One's not such a low number.

I never thought that I'd be with anyone except him.

That explains a lot.

So, yeah, about earlier --

You don't have to say anything about it. I get it, Luke.

While waiting for Noah to wake up, Luke’s mother Lily sees Reid and Luke share a ‘moment,’ and asks Luke what exactly is going on between them.

He told me that he has feelings for me.

What? I can't believe it. You're worrying about Noah, and for his doctor to take advantage of that --

He's not taking advantage of anything, Mom. He's been completely honest this whole time.

So you're encouraging him? What about Noah?

Mom, we broke up. You know that. He said he needed his space. He couldn't have that with me there, so we ended things.

You said that Dr. Oliver has feelings for you. What about you? Do you have feelings for him?

Yeah. But I'm not really sure what they are right now. Reid's sure, though. What?

I just -- I can't imagine you with anyone other than Noah.

Yeah. I used to think that, too.

He doesn't seem like a very nice man.

Dr. Oliver? He's not. He's rude, and he's cold. He's rude.

And you find that attractive?

No, it's just -- he's in your face, like -- he's like, "Okay, here I am, and this is what I'm feeling. Deal with that." And to have a guy like that, a guy who says exactly what he feels at all times -- to have somebody like that say that he likes you, I mean, it feels nice for a change.

When Noah wakes up from the coma (without brain damage, and with steadily improving eyesight), he asks Luke to get back together, making Reid jealous and hurt. Luke is torn and unsure of what he wants, but tells Noah the situation has changed.

As the sexual tension between them continues to build, Luke and Reid keep quiet, trying to keep their romantic drama from complicating Noah’s recovery- until Noah sees them kissing. Noah is angry and hurt, and breaks off his and Luke’s attempt at reconciliation, even going so far as to punch Reid.

Reid has fallen, and fallen hard and fast, for Luke. Luke is growing increasingly closer to Reid, but still trying to figure out what exactly he wants. The two seem headed for a relationship, but with three months left in the show, it’s anyone’s guess how this will end.

Confessions of a Ship Jumper, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Luke/Reid

In late 2009, ATWT announced that it would be introducing a new character, Dr Reid Oliver, who would be Noah’s surgeon. There was immediate fan speculation that he would be gay and serve as a romantic stumbling block for Luke and Noah’s foundering relationship. But everyone knew that the show was ending in less than a year, and expected/wanted Luke and Noah to ride off into the sunset together.

Nobody expected that in a matter of months, Reid would become a serious romantic interest for Luke, or that half the fans would promptly jump ship and begin an intense campaign for Luke and Reid to end the show together. But that is exactly what happened.

Many Luke/Reid (or LuRe) fans like both pairings; many are former Nuke fans; many are fans who never cared for Nuke but fell in love with LuRe.

I myself am a long-time Nuke fan who had grown increasingly put off by the show itself, but still hung on, mostly for the fandom (because Nuke has an absolutely amazing fandom). Despite my issues with the show, I never expected to want Luke or Noah to be with anyone else. When Reid first showed up, I didn’t much care for him- but by the time the romantic sparks really started flying between Luke and Reid, I was totally sold.

Luke and Reid have amazing chemistry together, with a sort of Darcy-and-Elizabeth meets Nick-and-Nora-Charles connection. On a physical level, even when they hate each other, they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other. When not touching, they can’t seem to stop looking. Neither of them puts up with the other’s crap- when Reid is being an ass, Luke doesn’t put up with it; and when Luke is being a brat, Reid doesn’t put up with that. They’re constantly challenging each other, and making each other grow. Luke is more mature and self-confident with Reid, and Reid is more emotionally open with Luke. When not wrapped up in drama, they are happy together, whether they’re bickering, flirting, riding mechanical bulls, or playing chess. They make each other happier, better people- when they let it happen. And it’s been so long since Luke was happy- and it’s not like Reid has a lot of fun himself.

Another thing I also greatly appreciate about LuRe is that, while this is a love story between two gay men, there’s no coming-out angst or gay bashings or anything along those lines. It’s just two openly gay men developing feelings for each other in all the same sort of cliché ways that straight couples do in a soap opera.

There are tons and tons of interesting conflicts that could be explored in an established, long-term relationship- the age difference, the education difference, the class difference. Reid is not really a relationship type of guy, though Luke seems to have brought that out in him. We could see Reid dealing and adapting to being in a long-term relationship, and to having the incestuously close Snyder clan thrust upon him as in-laws. Damian Grimaldi may have accepted that his dear son Luciano is gay, but he certainly wouldn’t be happy to see Luke with the man who helped put him in jail. It’s a gold mine of possibilities.

I also have to mention the acting. Van Hansis, who plays Luke, and Eric Sheffer Stevens, who plays Reid, are both very skilled actors, and they bring out the best in each other. It’s a pleasure watching them work together, no matter what material they’re working with.

With the Luke/Reid relationship, ATWT has hit on a deathbed jackpot. Luke and Reid have plenty of potential to become a proper soap opera supercouple, with years of history behind them, and it’s a terrible shame they won’t have that opportunity.

With three months left in the show, this Luke/Reid/Noah triangle is one of the most popular and hotly debated current story lines. I don’t know how this will end, but my preferred ending is for Luke and Noah to part as better and wiser people for having loved each other, cherishing what they had. Noah then leaves Oakdale in pursuit of his dream to be a director, while Reid and Luke stay behind, following their respective chosen paths as a neurologist and philanthropist/businessman/pseudonymous gay erotica writer.

September is so near, and yet so far away. We only have these few short months left, and I pray that this new favorite couple of mine gets a happy ending.
