Very interesting point, and one that I saw on the first read of OotP. From the moment I read that scene in the compartment (and waaaaay before I found fandom and even started shipping any pairing, before I even cared) I thought that Luna liked Ron, or was at the very least interested in him. Her actions throughout the remainder of the book (that you cited) confirmed it. What I liked about Luna is that she liked Ron for Ron. JKR has always made Ron be second best at everything (not a dig at his character, trust me) that I was happy that he was finally going to have something of his own, seperate from his family or Harry. But, alas, it was not to be.
I'm so impressed that you keep posting essays about HBP. The book made me so totally lose interest that I hardly think about it. But, I do love reading your opinions, whether I agree with them or not.

Even though there were many problems I had with HBP, I love the characters and story enough to do stuff like this. And I'll hold my final judgement for Harry Potter after the seventh book comes out.

But really, there is so much in canon to play with for this pairing. It can develop on it's own, and doesn't only have to occur when Harry is paired off with Hermione.
I don't read too many Luna pairings though. I like Luna with Charlie, and Luna/Draco, though I haven't read any Luna/Harry yet. I just think that Ron/Luna is the best pairing for her, though Charlie and Luna discussing weird creatures together on some random dragon ranch is starting to grow on me too!

Luna/Draco sounds like tons of fun. And I've read some great Harry/Luna fics, too.
