They played Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" during communion at St. Al's today. Not only that, they played it at the 11:00 mass on the weekend that bishop Skylstad was here. I'm not quite sure what to make of that

I love that song, but it seems questionable in a church service.... Although its ambiguity may allow meaning to be imposed. "Anticipating Lent?" is an awesome post title.
I am actually in a facebook group about Leonard Cohen's authorship of that song, so strongly do I feel about it; although he's quoted as saying he loves to here covers of his work. You have to have several different covers of "Hallelujah" to get all the verses anyway.
I think some of the verses would be great for Lent, others not so much. The last verse, beginning, "I tried my best, it wasn't much," is particularly religious, but I can't remember if it's in the Buckley cover.b The verse about King David is kind of S&M. I guess the Old Testament was too, though.
