I know this is probably an old comic, but seeing this just opened a new wound and made me lose my appetite this morning. Can someone tell me where this panel came from, so I can never, ever, everread this author? And anyone who thinks this kinda shit changed with the reboot is coming for a rude awaken, of that I have no fucking doubt. The same ( Read more... )

It happend in War Games. I don't know who wrote the specific issue(s). I really hope it wasn't Brubaker or Gabrych. I like them. I don't think it's Grayson's or Horrocks' style. I think, because I loathe Lieberman's work and dislike Willingham slightly less, I want it to be one of those two. But I don't have the comic handy.

It's from Keith Giffen's Ambush Bug mini. It's supposed to be a "satire", but yeah, not remotely funny.

Oh, that makes me sad. I like his humor...usually. I have those JLI trades he did, with the Kevin Maguire art. D:

Yeah, a lot of Ambush Bug, particularly the more minis they put out, got less and less funny. That's not even the only thing you could legitimately be pissed about. I think Giffen was just getting burned out and pissed off with DDD--they refused to publish the last installment of his last Ambush Bug project because it was so scathing in its criticism of DC management.

But if you look at the 'real' action figures that get put out and the 'real' toys that are marketed, his satire is spot-on. Most comic-related merchandise is horribly misogynistic and most toys marketed to girls are insulting at best.

And from what little I've seen of the reboot, what DC is saying with everything they put out now is girls are not wanted, needed or allowed in their clubhouse any more. I gave up on them with the first issues of Catwoman and Red Hood and the Outlaws. I don't think I'll ever read, much less buy a DC comic again.

:o( Yeah, DC seems to be hell-bent on alienating it's loyal readership, whether pre- or post- reboot. I love Giffen though, so perhaps this was more a (failed) attempt to point out the fact that DC would be that insensitive to market a toy based on a teenage girl getting tortured. It probably could've been a little more clear that his intention was to point out the ridiculousness of such a toy even being produced ( ... )
