As some of you may know, I have a paper to write for my Queer American Studies class. It's going to be about slash fanfiction (and comparing it to lesbian and gay pulp, yadda, yadda). Well, I'm going to need your lovely opinions, fellow fanfic writers and readers. I want to take a bit of an information survey as well as get your opinion and strike ( Read more... )

What do you believe dominates fanfiction and why?: Currently a toss up between het and slash, though I think gen and femslash are becoming more prominent. I think it's largely because most of the writers are female as far as i've notice.
On a whole, do you think slash fanfiction is mainly written by females? Why do you think that is, if you do think this?: Yes, this is mostly because the people I know who write it (original or fan fiction) tend to introduce or hint at being female.
What do you believe male fanfiction authors write the most of?: Het. It would be easy to say femslash because women right slash, but it seems like mostly het to me.
What is your view on the representations of gay/lesbian/bi/trans/ect. in fanfiction? I don't mind at all.
If you write fanfiction, would you allow me to use your fanfiction (and cited, of course) in my paper?: If you really want to? ^^; (I'd like to know if you use mine though, so I can hide ( ... )

What do you believe dominates fanfiction and why?: slash-fanfiction tends to be about going beyond the canon and fulfilling wishes. LGBT relationships tend to be extremely marginalized in mainstream culture media of any sort, so fanfiction authors want to do something about it.
Also! A lot of popular media are very male-dominated-I'm speaking as someone involved in the Star Trek fandom, where we have one major female character, and one or two minor female characters. Rather than throw random females into the mix (like the actual shows/books/movies do...), fanfiction authors usually want to work with established chemistries.

On a whole, do you think slash fanfiction is mainly written by females? Why do you think that is, if you do think this?: Yes-there is still a lot of societal ( ... )

Forgot to mention! I've seen places and tend to agree myself that fanfiction places much more emphasis on penetrative sex than actual gay couples tend to. In fanfiction, anal sex is generally the be-all, end-all of intimacy, where that's not always true in real life.

I should also mention that these are just some issues I've noticed, but I generally don't have a problem with it.

What do you believe dominates fanfiction and why?:
Slash and gen. Because fandom wants what it doesn't have in abundance so we make up for it.
On a whole, do you think slash fanfiction is mainly written by females? Why do you think that is, if you do think this?: I think fandom is mainly female but that more men join every year. So yes the top percentage is female but that could change.
What do you believe male fanfiction authors write the most of?: I'm not sure. Mainly I've noticed it to be Gen, but I'm unsure of many people's true gender.
What is your view on the representations of gay/lesbian/bi/trans/ect. in fanfiction? I wish that they were as abundant outside of fanfiction.
Any thoughts or helpful opinions on these subjects?: That many reporters who write articles about fandom/internet/fanfiction wrongly/negatively imply that all of us are only here for the slash porn.

What do you believe dominates fanfiction and why?: ship fics, het, fem slash or slash, they're almost always ship fics.
On a whole, do you think slash fanfiction is mainly written by females? Why do you think that is, if you do think this?: yes, and only because most of the fanfiction writers i've known in my life have been female anyway.
What do you believe male fanfiction authors write the most of?: the only fanfiction writers i've met have written smut of varying gender pairings.
What is your view on the representations of gay/lesbian/bi/trans/ect. in fanfiction? usually terrible, because they're basic ship fics, there tends to not be a lot of focus on representing actual sexuality/gender issues. but it's nice to imagine worlds where /everyone/ is gay.
If you write fanfiction, would you allow me to use your fanfiction (and cited, of course) in my paper?: i guess.

What do you believe dominates fanfiction and why?: I think slash, honestly. Unless you count the shitton of Mary Sue fanfiction out there.
On a whole, do you think slash fanfiction is mainly written by females? Why do you think that is, if you do think this?: Yes. I think it's because it's "taboo", which just gives the idea of malexmale relationships more allure. In addition, you never have to worry about a female characterization annoying you.
What do you believe male fanfiction authors write the most of?: Probably het, but I can't say I've run across too many male fanfiction writers.
What is your view on the representations of gay/lesbian/bi/trans/ect. in fanfiction? I would like it if people stopped adhering to strict "seme/uke" roles in fanfiction, because I don't think they're a good representation of how most homosexual relationships actually work.
If you write fanfiction, ( ... )
