Not much to say, but... (Yeah that turns out to be a lie, rant ahoy!)

Ye heavens, what did I just watch? I've gone from thinking that Lady Gaga is just another overrated pop star to thinking that she is just a really fucking creepy overrated pop star. *gonk* Seems like a nice person in real life, though, so I guess there's that ( Read more... )

I probably love WRPGs for the same reason that I'm disappointed with Final Fantasy 13. If by "carve your own path" you mean "they'll let you go wherever you want to" I would much rather play something like that than FF13's extremely linear, poorly paced all-you-do-is-run-forward-and-fight-monsters game. Even when you get to chapter 11, and they let you sidequest, all you do is run forward and fight monsters more. I want to go back to Nautilus and play with the chocobos... It's a good thing I created a backup save thinking they wouldn't let me go back there. But it's LAME that I have to do that ( ... )

Wait, what?! Comments!? What. (Translation: HOLY SHIT I haven't seen you in a while, how are you? :D)

Again, battle systems are where it's at for me right now, and linearity is not a problem for me. (Actually you reminded me that I did like Diablos 1 and 2 a lot, if only for the loot, though they're not exactly as free as newer WRPGs. Might have to edit the entry...)

I think I just don't care about the "role-playing" in RPGs anymore; I play them because I find the battles interesting enough to keep going and because I don't think any other genres offer quite the same thing. (Seriously, I want to punch the SO4 dev team in the collective face for their stupid, stupid story attached to a fun-as-hell fighting system.) If I do role-play, it's more of a social experience for me. In a video game, the constant out-of-character jokes and atmosphere just aren't present, so once I'm done with character creation I have a hard time pushing myself to play.

You did the exact same thing I did re: the chocobos of Cocoon, and it is a pity that we ( ... )

I agree that Dragon Age is very over hyped. It looks like many other PC games on the market, but that's because it's a proven formula. But while I find it was amusing to watch, I don't think that I will pick it up anytime soon ( ... )

Well, remember that I liked FFX-2 for its battle system despite its utterly stupid plot and the remixed areas. (I think plot has slipped in importance for me since my earlier days. It's all about the characters and battle systems now. *sigh*) I am also supremely OCD, to the point where part of why I don't like choices is because I want to make the right ones, and a game's no fun if I'm just going to have GameFAQs open the entire time. I guess I just have lower-but-very-specific expectations for games? (Yeah, I'll go with that.)

I also don't see the restricted growth as a bad thing. It allows for much more difficult boss battles and keeps things exciting (for me at least), and it means you shouldn't sit around and grind forever. Making the game shit itself because your characters are broken is for the end/post-game content and/or Star Ocean ( ... )

I could have cared less about the plot of X-2, but I really liked the sense of accomplishment that I got when I mastered a skill, which is why I spent most of the time that I played that game grinding. I also liked dicking around with Captain Pink-pants in FFXII. I spent so much time sidequesting with him before going back and finishing that dungeon. I also level ground so much in FFXII that I had all 3 my myst charges (or whatever they were called) on all of my characters quite early on in the game, which let me beat the first demon wall (which you were supposed to come back later and beat). THAT is the sense of accomplishment that is missing in FFXIII for me. FFXII still continued to be challenging for me, since I kept my party at the same level, which made things interesting. Also, I got the Zodiac spear WAY earlier than I should have, but that only helped for the next couple of battles ( ... )

I don't really think Dragon Age Origins is overhyped at all. There are very few games that can actually make me laugh out loud while I'm playing, so much so that I have to pause and take a breather. Though I probably don't think it's overhyped because I'm the only person I know on this campus that plays WRPGs. Oh well. I'll just go talk to Alice about it some more.

It doesn't look like any other PC game on the market, actually. There aren't as many WRPGs out there as people think. (This coming from someone who is constantly on the roam for a new good WRPG to play...)

I also liked the plot of X-2, but, once again, I also like Tokimeki Memorial. But I definitely agree with Catrina about FFXIIIs "tubes." Gah. Not very fun. Apparently, Versus XIII has an actual world map. We'll see where that goes.

Both of you should get White Knight Chronicles, and then we can all do online quests together. I think this is a good idea.
