Jonghyun groans and rolls out of bed (finally) as somewhere across town, Jinki is already dressed. He yawns and makes his way to the bathroom. He brushes his teeth leisurely; he's not quite awake yet, but his morning routine is so deeply ingrained that even on his days off he's up and brushing his teeth before he remembers. He takes a hot shower (he always does - even in summer) and goes downstairs for breakfast, which is either cold cereal or hot toast, depending on what he's in the mood for. He opts for toast today; he wants to leave early so he can meet Jinki and go over Math.

The sun is just barely up and Jinki is already sitting at the bus stop. It isn't the one closest to his house, but it's close to Jonghyun's house, and Jinki has been coming here so long he's actually forgotten where his bus stop is. He looks around lazily; there isn't anything going on this early in the morning, but the sunlight is pinkish-orange against the houses, and the shadows have a bit of purple in them - it wasn't a rare sight, but it was a sight Jinki liked none-the-less.

"Good morning," Jonghyun yawns as he approaches. Jinki sees that he's wearing his uniform in Jonghyun-style again: the tie too loose, the shirt un-tucked, and the sleeves pushed up a bit. He's tried to pull of that look himself, but he every single morning he decides against it. It doesn't look as cool on him.

"Good morning."

Jonghyun sits down next to Jinki; they sit on the curb so that they don't get wet from the morning dew on the grass. When Jonghyun starts rummaging through his backpack Jinki knows what's coming, and leans closer to him.

"I just had some problems with these problems," he says, pointing at some problems without answers. Jinki goes over the process for him in the margin of the paper; he never gives Jonghyun the answer, he just does most of the work, pausing every once in a while to make sure the other boy gets it.

"... so I need to find the SIN and then-"

"Yeah, once you have the SIN you can finish it easily."

And Jonghyun starts scribbling numbers and Jinki thinks of flipping a coin - the odds that Jonghyun will come up with the right answer are about fifty-fifty. Jinki peeks over at the paper, and of the four problems Jonghyun has had trouble with, he has answered three of them correctly. Jinki smiles.

When the bus comes, they get on, and mechanically say hello to the driver. They pick a seat in the middle - it's the exact middle, both of them have counted the number of seats to the front and back so many times that if asked they'd probably say "Nine" in unison without even looking up.

They don't sit together because they're friends; they sit together because they know eachother. It's their mothers that are friends, and even though he dislikes how he's constantly being compared to Jinki, Jonghyun thinks he's an alright guy (if a little boring). "You should get better grades," but Jonghyun tries his best. "Straighten up - don't slouch!" but that's just the way he sits. "Aish, what a pleasure it must be to have Jinki as a son," at this Jonghyun always wonders (hopes, really) if somewhere Jinki's mom is telling him that she wonders what it must be like to have Jonghyun as a son.

Jonghyun puts on his headphones and looks out the window at the passing scenery. Jinki opens a book and begins reading (ahead of what has been assigned); it's hard for him to concentrate on reading while listening to the lecture when he's in class. Both safely in their own little worlds, they ride to school in silence. They part with "See ya," and "See you after school," and like usual, Jinki looks to see if Jonghyun looks as cool from back as he does from the front, and he does.

Jonghyun's band is going to be performing at a local talent event later today, and he wonders if he remembered to tell Jinki about it. Oh well, he thinks. He probably wouldn't want to come anyway. When the teacher starts going over things that Jinki already knows, his mind starts to wander, and eventually settles on whether or not he should go home and change before going to see Jonghyun play; he even considers wearing his uniform Jonghyun-style, but like always, he decides against it. He'll go home and change - he can get a snack before he heads back out.

The day progresses as usual; they see eachother at lunch but don't sit together. Jonghyun sits with his band and Jinki sits with his friends. Sometimes they look up at eachother (they even meet eyes a few times), but they just turn back to their respective conversations without thinking about it too much.

After school, Jonghyun takes his normal spot next to Jinki in the middle seat and is about to put on his headphones when -

"What time does your band go on, Jonghyun?" Jinki wants to smile at his perfect timing, but doesn't.

"Eh?" He's almost sure that he's hearing things. He looks at his watch.

"Aren't you guys playing today? What time do you go on?" Jinki smiles.

"Oh! I'm not sure. We're going to rehearse before we head down there," Jonghyun is smiling too, and to this Jinki smiles wider and gets a little excited. "But we're playing third-"

"I'll get there early then. ...Maybe I shouldn't say this, but I've always wanted to watch you play. You play the guitar, right?"

"Bass guitar, yeah-"

"Cool."

They laugh and talk (for the first time, really) until the bus stops. They get off talking, and want to stand around talking but Jonghyun has to go and Jinki wants to do some homework before he goes to the concert. Jonghyun calls out "You'll help me tomorrow morning, right?" to which Jinki says "Sure!" and they both realize it's the first time Jonghyun has actually asked.

I should do something for his birthday. ...Once I find out what it is. Jonghyun thinks as he rushes home.

Jonghyun is nervous backstage. His bandmates chalk it up to stage fright and continue tuning their instruments as they chat amongst themselves. Jonghyun peeks around the the stage and scans the crowd for Jinki and catches his mom waving at him. He smiles and waves back, slightly annoyed.

Why do I care so much?

The act before theirs ends, and Jonghyun gets on stage. It's so bright that he can't see anything in the crowd. Certainly not Jinki. Their drummer counts off and mechanically Jonghyun starts playing like he's done so many times before. He can play this song with his eyes closed, which is good, because his are closed; when Jonghyun starts playing - whenever he's surrounded by music, he closes his eyes. It's just what he does.

They're going strong and Jonghyun steps up the mic to sing. He opens his eyes; it's bad form not to. He's supposed to be trying to connect with the audience, but he doesn't feel like connecting. He wants to stay in his own little world; his world of music. But he does because all real bands do, and-

It's Jinki.

Jinki is cheering (lazily at first, but it's only the intro) and clapping. Then Jonghyun starts singing and the song ignites - at that second, Jinki isn't sure he's ever heard a song so great or so cool. He flinches when Jonghyun misses a chord and stutters "-uh." Luckily Jonghyun can roll with the punches and he's back into the song. Jinki locks eyes with him and smiles, and Jonghyun smiles and-

Jinki wants to sing.

More than anything, he wants to be on that stage with him, singing with him; just as cool as Kim Jonghyun. The rest of the performance is a blur; Jinki feels the song last forever and yet it's over way too soon, and when Jonghyun and his band bow and walk off stage, Jinki stands up and walks where he'll be able to see him on his way out. When Jonghyun walks around the corner, he waves and hurries to Jinki.

"I saw you," they say in unison. They both laugh, and Jinki thinks of wrapping an arm around Jonghyun and giving him a pat on the back as congratulations, but doesn't. They start talking ("You were really cool up there." "Thanks.") and begin the walk home; it's long enough that it's getting dark and they're still a ways off, especially Jinki, who rode with his parents to the concert because the walk is far. He didn't mind it now though.

"Seeing you up there... I think I want to sing."

"Really?!" The excitement in Jonghyun's voice startles Jinki a bit.

"Yeah, but I'm not sure I can-"

"Sing something for me, right now." Jonghyun waves his hand like he's ushering him onto a stage.

And Jinki does. His voice wavers a bit because he's nervous, but he manages to get through the whole chorus smoothly. Jonghyun applauds him, and they spend the rest of the walk home singing together and laughing when one of their voices crack, or they reach for a note that's just out of reach. A dog barks at their singing and it scares them; Jinki barks back. Jonghyun just looks at him with an eyebrow raised: is that supposed to be funny? Jinki laughs nervously and looks away.

The next morning their worlds collide; Jonghyun has a CD case full of things for Jinki to listen to, and he gives Jinki one of his very favorites for his birthday. Jinki raises an eyebrow - his birthday was either last year or still a few months off, but Jonghyun hastily adds "for last year's birthday," and Jinki smiles and accepts it. Jinki goes over Jonghyun's homework with him, really with him this time, collaborating on answers and even bring his work out for comparison.

"Last night at the concert. There was a businessman there, I got casted," Jonghyun pulls the card from his pocket. "See? SM Entertainment."

"Isn't that -"

"Yeah, it's Dong Bang Shin Ki's label."

"Woah."

"And I looked it up, I think... I think you should join too. You can join the academy with me. You want to be a singer, right?"

Jinki thinks he's never heard a plan he's agreed with so much in his entire life.

The next few days are nothing but songs and practice practice practice for both of them. They sing together, they sing apart. They sing on the bus, they sing at lunch, they sing in English - and Jinki applies at the SM Academy and is accepted; "You have a nice voice. It's soft." Jonghyun is waiting for him outside, and when Jinki walks out sullenly, he wants to give the older boy a hug, but doesn't. Then Jinki explodes into a smile and laughter and "I'm in!"

Jonghyun hugs him. Or Jinki hugs Jonghyun. It happens so quickly, that neither of them is sure who initiated it, but both feel their hearts beat in unison for a second; two hearts beating for their future.

Two hearts beating for music. And for eachother.
