In my head that should be Annie, but I can certainly see Gene brooding over the loss of & the not having thought about Sam, because he didn't want to feel the pain. That is until Alex arrives and destroys the hidden walls and pain...

Those were my thoughts too, as I can see both Gene and Annie not wanting false hope and pity, but the whole truth. Gene seemed more like the one to be not blaming himself, as he's probably gone past that stage quickly. Although Annie would more or less be dwelling on Sam's madness; if it were the truth and he would be from the future, does that mean he's really dead?
But, they can be anyone.

Yes they can, however I can still see Gene, since 7 years is a long enough spent with someone, enough to get to know all your paranoid, delusional secrets. :)
