Firefly isn't the sort of show that staggers you into love immediately, it's the sort of show that grow on you like lichen. It's all about the ensemble cast dynamics that work so wonderfully well. Not that it doesn't have terrible flaws amongst the few you have highlighted.

ps: I hate Mal.

And yeah, lots of Western stuff aren't American feeling. The Good, the Bad, the Weird. Those couple of episodes in the mid of Avatar S2.

Ah, that makes sense. Like I said, I did enjoy the cast dynamics so far so it may be that I was just approaching the show with the wrong set of expectations!

(Oh I was going to ask if he got worse because I don't hate him just yet, but after kor_pi's comment I think I may have to see for myself...)

And yeah those Avatar eps were definitely one of the examples I was thinking of. I think one of the other reasons I was disappointed is probably because I'm actually a bit of a closet Western fan too, and was hoping for something really fun with the worldbuilding... But I think I'll set that aside and give it another go.

yeah I'd give it a couple more episodes to give it a chance to fall in love with casts, especially if it's more feeling underwhelming than actual dislike. Though if no characters don't speak more to you after that it's fair enough to assume it isn't for you.

Haha, yeah, I'm pretty fond of western - of stories and settings about liminality in general - myself and Firefly is sadly not something that ever went anywhere with that but a sort of very generic archetypal "them be outlaws!" vibe. Cowboy Bebop definitely is a much more interesting take. Farscape too, despite not really being Western-y.

The thing is Whedon was never very good at worldbuilding.

what etrangere said. It's their chemistry that's so great. Also, the first episode is kinda weak, compared to the rest

Oh ok, good to know! I usually expect the pilot to be stronger, so I was worried the rest of the show would be similar.

LONG TIME NO SEE BTW, hope you're doing well! :P

Mal's (the captain's) character gets an overhaul after the pilot episode, whether he's more to your liking in the later episodes I can't say. He returns more to what he was in the pilot for the movie, but only for the movie.

If you're willing to try more, everything with Jayne is good, I think. "Jaynestone" and "Ariel". The former also has an unfortunate focus on Simon Tam's and Kaylee's (the mechanic) tragedy of errors romance. "Out of Gas" is my favorite episode of the bunch, but it works better if you already know and love the crew. It has flashbacks to how everyone in the original crew came together and there's this tiny, wonderful twist at the end.

Oh, that's interesting. Even if the changes don't improve my opinion of him, they may make him more palatable...

So yeah, I think I've been convinced to try more. XD Thanks for the recs -- I may try skipping around a bit and then going back to watch in order.
