I still hold out hope that someday they'll continue animating the series (the novels were still being released as recently as 2008), but I'd guess it's not profitable enough... D:
I saw that while still in college, upon a friend's (and super anime fan's) recommendation. He loaned me his VHS (!) copies and said I'd like it because of all the pretty guys. And he was absolutely right of course. The story helped, too, but I'm sorry to say that because I only saw both OAVs once, I've forgotten chunks of it.
I remember my friend's copy was dubbed in English but they used very capable voice actors...somehow, back in the 90s the English voice acting was pretty good. I'd say Ranma and El Hazard are the best examples of this.
Anyway, I do remember I was so taken with Narsus as well as Daryoon (Kazuhiko Inoue did his voice?? Wow, I must get ahold of the Japanese dub) that it killed me when he went all gay for Arislan. Well, you know what i mean. Back then I wasn't aware of the existence of boy love or what have you. -_-;;; But anyone could smell the lurrrve from a mile away. Waaaah.
It's actually up to six episodes by now! (By "now" I mean like by 1996ish XD) The first two were an hour each, but the last four are 30 min. episodes. It's definitely worth hunting down the whole thing again if you can; the production values on the last two episodes suddenly shot up (though the first four were already gorgeous, of course!)
The English dub on the earlier episodes really is pretty good (my downloaded copy has dual audio files); halfway through I think they changed dubbing companies or something though so stuff gets weird. But yeah I remember 90s dubbing was actually not that bad, depending on the show.
when he went all gay for Arislan
LOL yeah, the subtext. XDDDD I prefer not to think of it that way though because Arislan's like 14!
re: Natsume Yuujinchou, yeah I love him in that! It cracks me up. Have you watched both seasons?
and re: Yoshitaka Amano, yup you're right, he did the illustrations for the original novels I believe, so the animated designs were based off of his designs.
Whaat? See how far behind I am with anime? I never even knew Arislan had been extended to 6 eps. But now that I think about it, I think my friend did say something about it being cut short and how he only had the first two (which was what I saw, back in...1998 I believe).
To my regret I didn't make a copy. Not like I can play it now if I did, since it was a VHS copy. >D I hope I can somehow still find the eps/dvds. :)
I forgot Arislan's 14! -_-;;; And thanks for clarifying re. Amano. I've always loved his work and would collect some of his art books. I was happy to see his illustration of Pharangese in one of them. :)
And yes, I've seen both seasons of Natsume. I really should rewatch it one of these days. I liked it a lot; I get a lighter Mushishi vibe off it but it's also original in its own way. Besides, who can resist Nyanko? Hahaha. :)
Lastly: If I'm not mistaken, Yoshitaka Amano had a hand in the character design. I think. I mean, the art style (especially around the eyes, and with Pharangese) looks very much like his signature style. :)

Natsume is really one of the better recent series I think. I adored it too. (Nyanko is adorable. <333 I want a Nyanko plushie, man. XD)

(Why yes I love Kazuhiko Inoue and still believe he should've voiced Aoshi. Not that the guy who did get the part did a bad job, though)
