Just got back from quartet-playing (finally). Was supposed to be a one hour gig but we were having so much fun we ended up playing for much longer. Much much longer. Uh yeah. Aside from the Dvorak we did a Mendelssohn octet and then a few Haydn trios for two flutes and cello (the two violins who stayed behind read the flute parts ( Read more... )

I'm stealing it. I used to be very much into classical music back in teh day when I was playing flute. But it's been sitting under my bed now for a few years... and it's even been longer since I last played it in public.

I still love Shostakovich.

It was an intimidating piece to learn and perform, but boy - you got a thrill when you made it through without a complete total disaster.

That's the weird thing about music... all that practice and you can still botch it live. It's one of the things that drives the interst I have in shows like American Idol = music is about talent and preparation, but it's also a little bit about luck.

Yeah, I have fond memories of performing Shostakovich one year... it was indeed very intimidating, but the post-concert high lasted quite a while. :D

Have movements 2 and 3 now; movement 1 is stalled at 30%. I'll put them up tomorrow, I think.
