So a week ago Saturday we get back from our last trip trading kids back and forth with dad and pick up the younger girls from Grandma Pat's and all generally crash. Then the phone rings in the middle of the night and hubby and I argue about who has to go get it (the only land line is downstairs). Sorry for hearing this. Even if she was suffering from Alzheimer, it's still a loss. But I know that for me with my grandparents it was somehow the same - it was a gradual good-bye with them getting less and less involved in the present. Best wishes.

I like that line "them getting less and less involved in the present." Yes. There were ties on our end that were broken with her death, hopes of healing and I don't know what all, but she had broken all the ties but the physical long time back. So it's a loss, but also part of a long process of loss.

Sorry for your loss. If you read back through my postings you'll see I just lost my dad last week under similar circumstances.

Yes, I saw that - I think his funeral was two days after hers? I think your dad dying was more of a shock, though. I hope y'all are doing well. Thank you for the good thoughts. :)

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. It's hard to accept the loss of a parent, and somehow the addition of Alzheimers or dementia makes it a very drawn out, sad thing.
