Time, thought Minerva McGonagall, had a strange kind of magic to it. You knew all the while that it plodded steadily on, dragged, even, at times, and yet if you ever turned back to look, it was like peering down a well and not comprehending how it had got so deep.
She felt that way more and more these days, with her fiftieth year at Hogwarts fast approaching. Fifty years of students passing through the school, under her care first as Transfiguration mistress; then as Head of Gryffindor, and now finally, as Headmistress of Hogwarts.
It was a title that she didn't plan to keep for long. Her last promise to Albus had been to take care of the students, a responsibility she had always undertaken most seriously, to the best of her abilities. She had seen them through the treacherous year of Voldemort's reign, done her utmost to send them to safety, fought alongside the best of them, and mourned the loss of every one who had not made it out.
The war was almost ten years done now. The last of the repairs to the school were complete at last, and Hogwarts was whole again. Minerva's job was done.
She had never meant to stay here forever. It was time to move on, make her peace with her memories here -- good and bad -- and reconnect with life outside Hogwarts.
It was, in short, a new adventure, and somewhere inside her she could still feel the excitement of a little girl who had once stood on platform nine and three-quarters clutching a brand new wand, fresh-faced and ready for her life to begin.
Minerva smiled as she took quill to ink and set the first words of her letter of resignation onto parchment.
