FIC: Traitors (Batman - Gordons, Gen)

Jul 22, 2008 23:02

Title: Traitors
Author: shiiki
Rating: PG-13. That scene in the movie was fairly disturbing.
Characters/Pairings: The Gordons (and the eldest son, whatever his name is), Gen
Word Count: 302
Fandom: Batman (I know, I'm nuts.)

Summary: Traitors. That's what they are. Liars and cowards, but most of all, traitors.

Notes: This is absolutely nuts. I have no idea why this wouldn't leave me alone, but since I wrote it, it might as well join the rest of my insane ramblings that make up my fic collection. :P (Spoilers for the latest Batman movie, obviously.)

Traitors. That's what they are. Liars and cowards, but most of all, traitors.

Keith is pretty sure he's known true fear - that night when there'd been a gun to his head, and Mum and Dad had both been crying, and he'd thought he was going to die, oh God, and he'd wet himself with the fear, and he couldn't breathe, and that cold, mocking voice he still heard in his nightmares taunting his father ...

And then him, barrelling into Keith's captor, saving him, saving them all.

He was frightened, he doesn't remember any of it clearly, Mum said afterwards, when Keith tried to tell the truth to the journalists.

But he knows what he saw, and who was the real hero that night; and it wasn't the monster that all of Gotham is glorifying. That Dad is holding up as a shining knight. It disgusts Keith to watch this.

It's wrong, he announces. Dad looks at him sadly.

It's complicated, he says, but his explanations about true heroes and what Gotham needs and a man having the strength to take all that on make no real sense to Keith.

To him, it's simple: Harvey Dent tried to kill him for some twisted reason; Batman saved him.

You're a child, Keith, Mum says with a shake of her head, because Dad's eyes have gone hollow and he isn't answering. You don't understand. It's not that easy.

There's nothing he can say to that, of course, though inside his head, the mutinous thought, maybe they're the ones who don't understand, rings out.

At night, he opens the window and sticks his head out into the cool night air. In the distance, he hears sirens, and thinks about how the police are out to get his hero.

Stay free, Batman, he prays. You're the real hero.
