FIC: After the War (R/Hr)

Summary: In the middle of the night, Ron tries to get Hermione to come back to bed. (Written for the CM Scribbulous prompt 'Quill'.)

He’s barely been asleep for fifteen minutes when he is roused by Hermione throwing the blankets back. He watches sleepily as she pads across the room in her socks, heading for the desk in the corner. She fumbles around on the desktop for a moment, searching for her wand, shuffling parchment about. A light thump, as something falls to the ground.
‘Hermione?’ Ron whispers sleepily.
When she doesn’t answer, he sighs and rolls out of bed. His back is aching from bending over all of yesterday, as he pored over architectural designs for the rebuilding of Hogwarts.
‘Come back to bed, love,’ he says, but she shakes her head. Her wand is lit now, the pinprick of light casting tiny shadows on the wall.
‘I need to work - the trials … there’s too many, Ron, I’ll never get through it. And then we must get Harry home to testify - why he had to leave now …’
‘Hermione.’ He winds his arms around her, and she relaxes against him. ‘He’ll be back.’
‘I know.’ Her voice is muffled, as though she’s trying not to cry.
‘You’re trying to do too much.’
‘We have to. Who else is going to rebuild our world?’
He ignores this, peers at the quill she’s gripping in her hand, and grins. ‘Look, don’t do this tonight. You’re knackered - that’s a sugar quill you’re holding; I don’t think you’re going to write much with it.’
Although he can’t see her face, he can imagine her eyes and mouth widening in surprise, can feel the blush radiating off her skin
‘Come back to bed,’ he says, laughing, and this time she follows.
