I had movie night at Tania and Achilleas’s place today-I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but they’re fellow students in my department and we get together maybe once a month or so to just chill at their place and catch a movie.

I really enjoyed the movie when it came out in the theaters. I know very little about the Day of the Dead traditions, so it was quite enlightening. And the visuals in this movie were absolutely gorgeous. What I particularly liked, aside from the emphasis on family ties that span generations, is how what normally are ghoulish symbols (e.g. skeletons, skulls, talking about the dead) wasn't quite so frightening in this context. There were a lot of parallels with the Grave Sweeping holiday traditions in Chinese culture, between the offering of food and one day set aside for honoring dead relatives.

I do wonder how the concept of a final death (when one is forgotten) vs. regular death is reconciled with Catholicism. Might need to talk to some Mexican coworkers about that one.

The colours were spectacular. I loved that the concept of death and the afterlife got such a bright, cheerful treatment for once.

That's exactly the festival I was thinking of!

If you get some answers, let me know. That's a fascinating question!
