Empty Beaches and Warm Sand

It’s hazy in the soft morning glow, the ocean lazy and gentle, small waves lapping at the still cool sand. There’s a hint of a breeze, just enough to blow a strand of hair into his face-flitting over his eyes. Long fingers reach across and tugs the loose pieces behind his ear and trace a feather-light caress along his jaw. They walk along the fine sand, shoes in one hand and their other hand locked together.

The sun was rising, but slowly and the beach was still covered in darkness, with only patches of light. They flit around the edges of the shadows like they’re dark abysses and everytime he drew too close, the other would tug him back by the hand and he would be safe in a strong embrace. Slowly though, the shadows drew back and they stood there, watching as their shadows shrunk and shortened. Donghae watched as their shadows lay in the water and he wants to feel the water on his skin, but Hankyung holds him back, arms wrapped securely around his waist, whispering about the water being too cold and he won’t let Donghae get sick and nuzzling his face into Donghae’s neck.

They don’t hold hands after that, because there are people there and the sand shifts and sinks under their feet as they skip and run along the beach. They run right beside the water’s edge and there’s the occasional lick of foam against his feet as Donghae skips along, trying to retrace Hankyung’s footsteps in the wet sand. He runs along and it takes all his dancer’s grace to fit his steps inside slightly larger imprints, because Hankyung isn’t running anymore, he’s dancing, spinning and leaping and twirling around Donghae and then their footsteps become one, because Donghae traces the steps right into Hankyung’s arms and the other piggybacks him along and Donghae thinks that maybe they didn’t do this kind of thing over here.

The sun is hot and bright and the shadows are practically gone, no longer running free, but sticking close. They watch as the waves drew closer and closer, stronger and more awake than before and they don’t move even as the water licks at his toes and then his legs and it creeps up his leg and his jeans are wet and still he doesn’t move. The water is brushing at his waist before a hand wraps around his middle and pulls him deeper into the water and they swim out further and further until it’s just the two of them again and Hankyung only laugh and smooth back Donghae’s dripping hair as Donghae tells him about mermaids and sirens and giant octopuses.

It’s past the heat of noon and he sees an island in the distance. It’s green and rich and there’s flashes of colour somehow and Donghae thinks of what it would be like to leave everything behind and swim into the depth and maybe, maybe they’ll reach that beautiful haven and stay there forever. He drags Hankyung out into the depth again and Hankyung doesn’t argue with him as Donghae pulls him deeper and deeper, but when Donghae’s breathing starts to become ragged, the other pulls him close and they slide under the surface and the older man kisses him until Donghae calms down and they’re out of oxygen. Donghae lets Hankyung tug him back to shore and away from his oasis. He thinks it’ll be alright as long as he still has Hankyung.

The clouds shift and turn and twist in the pure blue sky and the two of them lie there and just watch the dance above. They think of clouds and Heaven and love and tomorrows and say nothing, because they don’t need to. An old man, out for a late stroll walk past and they smile and wave and hides their joint hands behind their backs. The shadows begin to creep in again and they sit in the gathering darkness and watch as patterns and shapes trace over the slope of their legs and the dips of their toes and Donghae wriggles his toes into the sand and nudges Hankyung’s underneath the sand. Donghae smiles as he watches the smaller shadow lean its head onto the other's shoulders and he's so happy that it feels like the whole world is tilting on its axis.

There’s no one else left, only them and the seagulls staring at them curiously and their hands aren’t behind their backs anymore, they’re on each other, smoothing over pink and tanned skin and untangling wind swept hair; there’s one on Donghae’s neck and one on his waist and his hands are wrapped around smooth shoulders and clutched in dripping hair. They’re in the water again and the warmth still lingers in the water, although it feels cool against heated skin and they kiss in the waves as the sun dips over the horizon. There’s splashes of vibrant red and patches of sharp purple and dabs of soft yellow painted in the sky and they touch and hold each other close and they love, rocking along to the sway of the tide as the night settles over them like a blanket.

The sun peeks out on an empty beach, the waves shyly washing over the imprints of where two figures had laid pressed close only hours ago and then there’s only creeping shadows and the cry of a single seagull as it takes off.
