There was only a brief start of shock that ran down Merlin at hearing that name again, though it was stopped dead by the pit in his stomach. He knew the new rule. He knew what it meant. And it horrified him. No, not horrified. There were no words that could truly contain all that he felt then. In a way, he felt like he was dying right there, walking into the coliseum with forced steps, nerves buzzing in his skin and sending racing signals everywhere in his body. She'd been waiting, the gas pellets in her hand and the mask on her face, since the morning. Braxiatel's pill was in a small bottle, stored in an arm rest.
She'd wondered, idly, what would happen if she took it before the match started. In the end, she decided it was too much of a risk - Merlin may have to fight someone else, someone who didn't mind killing a child.
When she finally appeared, she reacted instantly, throwing the pellets to the ground. They released the knock-out gas immediately, and she only hoped it worked.
