"I'm not a damsel!" Fumie yelled, though she knew it really was pointless to fight the narrator.

OF COURSE IT IS FOR I, THE NARRATOR, AM ALWAYS RIGHT.

"I'm fine except for the shouting," she promised, speaking to Minato this time. Really, she was. All right, so there were undead Nulls and weird freaky shadow creatures chasing them. And there was the darkness that was pretty damn unnatural. And...

So she wasn't really all right. But she had to be. She could fight this. Sam was counting on her and Minato needed her to be calm. She had her metatags. It was okay.

LITTLE DOES SHE KNOW WHAT-

"Shut up!"

WELL FINE. BUT ONLY BECAUSE IT DRAWS OUT THE SUSPENSE!

Minato nodded, taking note of the light fog that had formed around them. He had found quite a while ago that there were better ways to spend your time than arguing with voices in your head, but the two were hardly in public right now. He had just been surprised that other people heard it too.

He unhooked his rapier from his belt. He may not be a genious, but he wasn't stupid, and he knew what the fog brought with it.

Fog was bad. Suddenly Fumie thought of the first time she'd seen Nulls and unconsciously held Minato's hand tighter.

"If you see a Null, you can't let it touch you," Fumie said, glancing up at him. "The tags that heal it are really rare. We can't waste them. I don't have many." 'Many' here being 'one'.

Talking made her feel better. Then she didn't have to think about the scary things. She hated scary things. She couldn't even handle ghost stories without hiding. So she reached into her bag and counted her metatags, arranging them in order of usefulness. Anything that could hurt was good.

FROM BEHIND LEAPED - well, LEISURELY CRAWLED--

Minato was already on it, stabbing at a humanesque black blob behind them. One two three CRITICAL HIT! DID YOU SEE THAT?!

What was left dissipated back into the thickening fog.

GOOD JOB. Too bad you lost the girl.

"Fumie?!" Minato turned frantically, tripping over himself and hitting the ground hard. He could see her standing there in the fog, and beyond her more Nulls had already formed.

HA! JUST KIDDING.

The Nulls rose up from the fog, shuffling towards Fumie. They did look a little different now, patches of decaying flesh glitching over their black bodies. Fumie swallowed and stumbled back, reaching into her pouch and spreading out her metatags.

"Go away!" she shouted, NOT A VERY DRAMATIC LINE, EITHER- and threw the tags with precise aim. The tags glowed and burned where they touched the Nulls, causing them to fall back in shrieks. They sank into the fog, the last of their screams echoing.

"M-Minato, you all right?" Fumie asked, turning to him. She held a tag tightly in her hand, just in case more came.

Metatags. Those would have been useful to bring along. If he had planned this better, he probably would have brought some food or medical powder too. As it was, he just had the sword in his hand and the evoker hidden on him in case of emergency. And only for an emergency. Fumie was having enough trouble dealing with the things that were going on as it was. The last thing she needed was to see her friend shooting himself in the head.

Considerably annoyed with Brian Blessed now, Minato got up off his hands and knees. "I'm fine." He looked around. The fog was hard to see through, and he hoped it was as dense as it was going to get. Off in the distance, he could almost make out the wirr-wirr-wirr-wirr of a Satchii on the loose.

"Keep moving," he said gently nudging her forward.
