So Squeenix is giving away a whole bunch of free Ohkubo-drawn, original illustration cards to anybody who buys Soul Eater volume 20 or Soul Eater Not! volume 01 from certain major bookstores in Japan.

But wouldn't ア-グナ be a more accurate spelling than ア-ニャ? WOULDN'T IT? OHKUBO????

No, it wouldn't be.

Katakana is supposed to reflect the way that a name is pronounced, not how it's spelled.

An English speaker looks at "Agna" and sees a name that is pronounced with a "g" sound. But there are other languages (Greek I know for sure, and Italian, and possibly a few others) in which "Agna" is pronounced with a "y" sound, like ah-nya.

So assuming that Ohkubo intended for Agna's name to be pronounced in one of those European languages, then yes, the correct katakana is still ア-ニャ. Which is what he used.
