so the WRC (womens resource centre) at school is having a film this week about this very topic. Would you mind me printing this out and giving it to participants to drive the film home? this is wonderfully written and I think it would be great to have it posted all around campus... but that's for student govt to decide.
I would be honored if you printed it out, absolutely, but give me credit and put my website address on it if you do, I know it doesn't really have anything to do with photography, but it can't hurt to throw in some shameless self promotion.
A very insightful post. If only more people would accept these truths...especially the teens being warped by their magazines and the images they see around them. That is when the sinister foundation of life-long superficiality is laid. And few it seems find a way out of the programming. I want to eventually focus on these things through future Departure productions.
I agree with all of that. I just haven't been able to make it work. Maybe it's time for a more conscious effort? It certainly doesn't help that I work in an industry where the definition of beauty is incredibly narrow and valuable.
Objective beauty is something I've been burdened by wanting my entire life. It's something I really only want to have once, just to know how it feels. That sounds strange, but I think you get what I'm saying. It's frustrating and debilitating. I hate it, but I can't let go of it.
Incidentally, I'm glad you're happy in your own skin now more than you were before. Believe it or not, I did go through a similar phase, but it didn't stick. I hope it does for you. You're one of the most gorgeous women I've ever met and I want you to agree.
Anyway.
You're my hero, and thanks for posting this. I honestly didn't expect anyone to say anything meaningful.
Next time you come see me I'll make you feel beautiful! *sleazy wink*
but really... I'm glad you read this Dajah, I was afraid you might not. I wrote it for you, I love you to death and I hate it that you can't see how incredible you are. I guess I just wanted to let you know, I see it.
Are you coming out for thanksgiving or christmas? I miss you, and I think about you a lot.
I miss you too, and I'm sorry we didn't meet up last time I was in the area. That was a totally fucked up trip. Ugh.
I don't think I'll be there for Christmas, and I'm definitely not there for Thansgiving. I have no idea WTF is going on. I'll let you know when/if I know. I do want to see ya. :)
