On Tipping

As I've mentioned before, I frequent the Tripadvisor forums, specifically the Las Vegas forum. One topic that comes up often is that of tipping. An interesting discussion came around recently asking if people tipped housekeeping differently in Las Vegas than they did when traveling elsewhere? Did staying in a large resort make a difference in ( Read more... )

That's a good point about leaving a tip every day, I don't know why I never thought of that! I've always left a tip at the end but now I'm going to start leaving the tip every day.

If you're only staying somewhere for a day or two, tipping at the end is probably fine. Anything longer than a couple days and you're bound to have a change of housekeepers.

I started tipping daily because it was easier - just leave the money on the bed or table as I head out each morning. I'm always on such a limited budget that I find I don't notice it as much when I'm leaving $5 each day. Leaving $40 at the end of stay, that I notice more. I just feels easier to budget the $5, even though it's the same thing in the end. :D

I always tip on the last day [Edit: you have a good point about tipping every day. I'm going to start doing that]. My dad travelled a lot when he worked, and he taught his kids to always tip and be polite to staff members. The size of the hotel doesn't affect the size of my tip. The more days I stay and the more people for whom I'm responsible, the higher the tip.

We camped a lot as kids, being lowly corporal's kids. But we did eat out and had an occasional hotel stay, so I did learn good tipping from my parents ( ... )

I always tip the housekeeping staff, but sometimes do so each day and sometimes only the last day. This is mostly because I'm preoccupied; when I rememember, I tip each day.

I read an article by a woman who'd worked as a hotel maid and she said the worst part was being ignored by patrons, as if she were a part of the furniture. After that I made a special effort to say a friendly hi to housekeeping staff and ask them how they are, and they are almost always very friendly.

I have days when I've forgotten as well. Usually I just double the tip the next day and hope it's the same housekeeper.

I always talk to the housekeeping staff. Very often they're the friendliest staff you'll meet when you stay at a hotel. I find that especially true in larger hotels.
