Fandom Meme

Ask me a fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Questions can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about TV shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically.

What have you written that you might not have thought you were able to/ever would have, but for the opportunities fandom/fanfic offers? I'm thinking of genres, themes or issues (eg slash, parody, abuse, AUs) that you wouldn't have necessarily felt comfortable writing or ever have considered writing in an original fic.

Well, I cut my slash teeth in fandom. I write m/m relationships in original fiction now, but at one time, I'm not sure if I would've done that. Fandom allowed me to explore sexuality in a way that made me feel comfortable.

AUs have been fantastic, because they've gotten me interested in genres that I never would have touched before.

Do you think Angel is a good guy only as a means to an end? (To escape the pain of his re-souling, to follow a vain quest for true rebirth...) I still haven't worked out what I really think of him, which after 10+ seasons of TV is quite impressive.

Wow, that is an excellent question. I have to say that I'm not sure either. But if you think about the way he treats Lindsey in "Blind Date" and subsequent episodes, I think that says a lot about Angel. Lindsey basically comes to him and says he wants out of W&H, but Angel doesn't do a thing to help him. Instead, he pretty much sends him back into Holland Manners's arms.

Also, he seems fairly willing to bend the rules a bit when it suits him. Plus, there was his speech about how he missed the clarity that evil provided.

I don't know. I have to wonder...

The only truly selfless thing I can think of him doing was saving Faith (in the 'saving' sense, rather than saving her life, though he did do that as well), though if you have your evil head on there's parts of that that read like 'if I have to suffer you have to suffer too'. A lot of the other things he did were... not always so nice. Hehe. Given how much stick Spike gave him, he almost made the better good guy. ;)

Did you ever drop out of a fandom completely, including stop loving its subject? If so, why?

Well, I did drop out of the JAG fandom. I didn't stop loving the subject, though. I just got fed up with the general climate in the fandom. Some of the fans who didn't like the storyline direction started taking it out on the one of the actors, even to the point of closing one of his websites. It made me sad for the guy, because in a chat, he made it pretty clear that he was aware of the fan reaction, and he sounded so sad.

Taking it out on the actors is pretty shitty! Yeah, that would make me leave too. I was glad that I never really was active in Torchwood fandom when I read that people sent death threats to one of the writers... *gags*

if there was a stargate that went to Middle Earth, who would you send through it? Why?
Would you bring a LOTR character back into the Stargate verse?

Well, part of me think that sending Bill Lee, the ultimate fantasy geek, to Middle Earth would be a lot of fun. But the poor guy's head would explode. So I'm thinking Ronon Dex or Teyla would fit in well.

As for who I'd bring back... totally Legolas for the fun of watching him interact with the various personalities. But an argument could be made for Eomer. ;)
