I'd come up with a subject line, but Siffy would want to make it new and hip.

Siffy is adorable. And not in the good way. Remember my bitchiness way back when Sci-Fi changed its name to SyFy Siffy, especially after I read their explanation as to how they were trying to remove the geeky connotations of the term "sci-fi" and appeal to a broader (i.e. not sci-fi geeks) audience? Well. Now they're changing the name of their ( Read more... )

I read that the real reason why they had to change the name was because Sci-Fi couldn't be trademarked because it was a common word. I remember reading that in Newsweek a while back, and that all the other quotes were from the marketing machine giving reasons that had been voted on by a board of reps. *shrug*

But I do agree with you on all of it, that they would insult the people who support them is not cool.

Whether that's the real reason they adopted the name Siffy or not, the dumbasses that write copy for their site still wrote a long explanation about how sci-fi is "no longer the domain of geeks and nerds" and their "awesome" new name would change all that. I have the original article linked somewhere. They could have renamed the network without all of that.

It's a clear case of biting that hand that feeds you.

Seeing this happen over and over and over with just about every network on TV is driving me insane, particularly with SciFi and what used to be TechTV. Just seems like that the media has decided that we need some kind of homogenized soup of networks that are essentially interchangeable apart from what may or may not be showing for about five hours on weekend nights or at 4am.

It was funny at first, but I find it kind of sad (if convenient for having something to do while eating lunch) that this has happened to the point that Bravo and A&E both constantly show reality shows now, instead of anything to do with their original base, and TBS, TNT, and any other thing with a T in its name seem to have become the House, Law & Order, and any of the Law & Order babies networks respectively, as opposed to actually having thought-out programming.

...Satellite Five is coming soon. I know it.
