but this awesome sentence is from the NYTimes review of Thor:

Ms. Portman’s cute-nerd sidekick is Kat Dennings, and their nerd mentor is Stellan Skarsgard, who at this point must be a leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in Pretend Science.

Nobel Prize in Pretend Science!

RE Utah, Bryce Canyon is gorgeous, and if I remember correctly we visited it between Zion and Arches so it must be at least vaguely on the way.

I don't know how you feel about Las Vegas and Hoover Dam, but those are certainly feasible on that route if you have any interest.

Grand Canyon is amazing. Arizona's government isn't worthy of it.

Candy and I did a couple of loop trips down to a cons in California some years ago. Bryce Canyon in Utah is still the second most gorgeous place I have ever been on this planet (The Emerald Pool in Dominica is number one). Bryce lets you drive on pink quartz highways that glitter under the sun (and full moonlight), and it had to have been the inspiration for the phrase "purple mountains majesty".) Drive down to Rachel, Nevada on the ET Highway past Area 51 ~ absolutely stunning desolated landscapery. Taos, NM is a great stopover, too. The Harris Ranch Inn and Restaurant in Coalinga, CA is a nice overnight stay when driving up from LA to Seattle.
