Previous (Full) Rant Post

No real directions, but this isn't a place for debate. It's a place for RANTIN' AND RAVIN'.

There is a rule: There is to be no calling out anyone by name in Rants, Chatter, or on the Meme itself. This only produces an atmosphere of animosity and it is no longer tolerated. If you see any names being ranted about, please link ( Read more... )

I don't understand the obsession with making fans justify what they enjoy.

Well, I don't understand why the idea of explaining why they like something to someone who just doesn't understand and is genuinely curious, and they've explicitly stated they don't want to start a wank is so offensive to some people. Next time I see someone jump on somebody who just asked, out of curiosity, why others find something interesting I'm going to punch someone. Or punch back, because this person who ask this question might be me, since I'm a curious person incredibly fascinated by the differences between the ways in how I and other people think/experience/understand the world/universe/life/fanfiction/everything, and as far as I understand, I'm going to get punched for that. ==' *eyeroll*

there are people who just use it to start a wank, but if someone says they don't...?

The last go-round about TTOBB, the OP said they didn't want to start wank, and they didn't act like they wanted wank, and they didn't get wank. The one before that, though, the OP said they didn't want to start wank but TTOBB was a steaming bucket of shit, and only the mentally incompetent or liars could claim to enjoy it.

In the case of TTOBB, if someone has that questions, don't fucking bring them here. Go to AO3, where there is a fucking cottage industry of three writers and I don't know how many artists and at least fifty regular commentators who will fall over themselves to discuss the story with you. Whatever merits the story itself has or hasn't, you can't fault the amount of to-and-fro among the creators and consumers of it on its archive.

(Sorry if this posts a million times, LJ is being twitchy with my OpenID)

OP

Yeah, ok, I see it now. I haven't read TTOBB, but I'm sorry stupid people are causing wank over it.

You don't see at all how people might get offended by the tone of your original post? You started off very confrontational ("Oh look at me, I'm naming a fic!"), and ended your rant with passive aggressive tiny text. As someone who initially scrolled past, I thought your rant read very condescendingly. "I dislike this fic, but so many people do like it! Let me study your emotional workings because my mind can't comprehend why people disagree with me about the quality of this fanfic ( ... )

OP of the original post from the previous rant post -

Er, the person who posted this particular rant isn't me!

And the tiny text was actually about the "no naming names" thing, because that tends to hijack rants even though it's been cleared up that naming a fic isn't against the rules.

Other than that, I can see why you thought I was being passive aggressive. Not so great with words, me - and I'll admit, I'm a little tired of hearing about this fic everywhere.

I explain myself better further down this thread.

As for why the rant post? Traffic, my friend. Best place to get a response. And except for that one reply (the one that set off this rant), the responses I got make me want to go back and give TTOBB another shot.

That kind of thing is passive-aggressive bullshit. Liking something is not an intellectual effort. I can't explain to you why I like strawberries better then apples, I just do. You can taste the strawberry, you can taste the apple, but there's no explanation.

To elucidate:

"Why do you like apples?"
"They taste like apples."
"Yeah, but why do you like that?"
"I just do."
"Yes, but why? They're not that great."
"But they are, they're apples!"
"Yes, but why do you like that?"

(Hint: one of these hypothetical persons is being a passive-aggressive idiot)

If you want to discuss fics, do it in the chatter post. Don't go to the rant post, make one more boring rant about how that certain popular fic isn't all that sad/hot/good and pretend that you're not pissing on someone's leg. Because you definitely are.

I'll have you know fruit can't be lame. They don't have legs or arms.

I would understand this rant far more if there hadn't been several people who actually did answer your question.

Yes, that one person was super defensive, but as others above said, if you've been burned by this kind of thing before (and people have been, including about discussing TTOBB in particular), it's very easy to be mistrustful.

For a non-Sherlock example: I like discussing my tastes in an analytical way. I'm generally happy to talk about why I love what I love with someone who is curious. But I WILL NOT do it for my favorite ship ever, Spike/Buffy, unless I actually know the person and know they're chill. Because "I don't want to start wank" is not enough assurance after years of being told I'm a bad person who supports sexual assault for shipping it even after someone initially said they really just wanted to understand the other POV.

So yeah, some fans don't trust it when it comes to Sherlock or TTOBB. And I get that.

As a side note, anon: anyone who gives you shit for shipping Spike/Buffy is a moron. SHIP IT TILL THE SHIPYARD BURNS, BAYBEE.

OP

As the OP from the previous rant post pointed out above (and I should have in the original comment, my bad), I AM NOT HER. ;)

Especially when it is always the bathroom scene that comes up in those arguments.

Oh, of course. God, I have so many feelings about that scene and I really wish they just hadn't. [/ot]

I'm a Mystrade shipper so I know about passive aggressive idiots who just want to 'understand'. Have you ever suddenly get it why people may like something? Because the people who keep asking are still looking for that magical right answer.
