She swung her legs one across the other. Her toes were painted black, each with a neon-blue stripe down the centre, even though John was sure there were laws against painting your toenails over the age of forty-five. Sometimes he honestly wondered if he or Harry were adopted. She patted his knee, and took a sip of her own coffee. “You need to let the bitch out. You’re too nice, John

Harry’s car was an old, red Mazda that was a good size for Watsons but not so much for anyone taller. Sherlock, in the passenger seat, practically had his knees around his ears. He hadn’t looked at John since they’d got in, and only spoke to direct him along the route he’d predicted Murray would have taken.
“Remember what Murray said this morning about cell phones?” Geoffrey commented from the backseat. “I bet he’s concocted this whole thing just to get one.”
“Well, you can ask him when we find him,” John said, glancing in the rear-view mirror. “After I skin him, of course.”
The car was silent for a few moments. Then Sherlock said, “So what were you reacting to?”
“Can we talk about this later?” John said sharply. “I want to focus on Murray.”
Which was true. The odd thing was, he didn’t feel frightened. Worried, yes, because his son was out in the mad streets of London in the middle of the night, of course he was worried. But against all reason, he felt less shocked and angry and afraid than he had when he’d come home a few hours

“Dad! Daddy!Murray bolted down the length of the office and threw himself into John’s arms, Sherlock leaning down to enclose them both. Their son was chanting very fast, “Don’t be mad, don’t be mad, don’t be mad

John stopped Harry’s Mazda in the taxi stand outside 221b Baker St. It was now close to three am and the streets on their way home had been dead empty. He switched the engine off and glanced at Sherlock, then turned around to talk to the boys

Oh, oh those poor boys. I feel bad about everyone's situation in this! John is miserable, Sherlock is helpless, but Geoff and Murray have been breaking my heart the most- it's so lovely (in an I-heart-angst kind of way).

Thank you, I'm incredibly touched to hear you say all that!
I hope the rest of the fic portrays the way these difficulties can only be solved by imperfect solutions, if they're solved at all. A small spoiler for the next part (I just opened up my computer to post it and found your comment) is that John does end up putting Hamish in daycare, but I hope it comes through that it's just because he needs a change, not because it's objectively a 'better choice', as I have utmost respect for the mothers who stay home with their kids as long as possible. Funnily enough, it was my father who stayed home and unemployed for some years after I was born, so I think a lot of him comes through in John is this fic (However, my mum is nothing like Sherlock XD).
In terms of other fics I've written, I usually post them to the filled prompts post, so a search through part 15 for my username will no doubt reveal a large handful. Just between you and me, I also wrote this odd thing (about John having to raise a de-aged Sherlock child) back when I was

*blushes* you are way too nice. People like you are the reason I keep coming back to this meme, dammit!
Haha yes, when I start writing Sherlock my brain always goes, "He's not such a bad guy..." and then I go back and watch basically any scene in the series and I'm like, "WOW, HE'S KIND OF AN ARSEHOLE." But I genuinely believe that in canon, John just sees past that and loves him anyway. It can't be easy but I like to believe it's possible.
I don't think I'll be writing Sherlock's POV this time, but everything you've said is precisely how I imagined him thinking. Do you ever read read wordstrings? Zie writes my absolutely favourite Sherlock POV fic in this fandom (and that's no slight on the rest of the fandom, there's some great fics out there). It's some version of zir Sherlock that I usually have in my head when I'm writing.
