John owns a bakery that Sherlock uses as a stakeout place for one of his crimes. Sherlock buys something every time he goes there, partially so he has an excuse to sit down near window for hours at a time, and partially because it gives him more facetime with the owner, whose mysterious career change from an army doctor to pastry maker fascinates Sherlock. Sherlock's case comes to a close, but Sherlock still finds excuses to go to John's bakery every day (he even finds himself eating the things he buys!) Eventually, they fall in love. <3

hope this is what you were after, anon. also, apologies for the terrible title. :D:John's service-earned habit of waking with the sunrise hadn't been a welcome addition to his life when he'd first come back to London, but now, on days like this, he was grateful for it. There had been rolling power outages in the neighborhood for weeks and once again, his alarm had failed to go off this morning. It was getting light early enough now that spring was turning into summer that he still woke up with just enough time to open up shop on time, but when the days had been darker there had been a few occasions where he woke up late to find some of his regulars already waiting at the door ( ... )

John selected one of the fresh muffins and set it on the counter in front of the man. "Anything to drink?" he asked. He didn't have any coffee brewed yet and he’d have to boil the water for tea, but he could do that while he took out the scones and put in the bread ( ... )

There was nobody in the shop but the two of them, nobody else John could be talking to, but it still took a few seconds before he got a response. "I'm sure it's perfectly adequate," the man responded, not even bothering to turn away from the window.

"Could you at least take it with you, please? Only, I can't resell it or give it away to anyone after you bought it, so it's a bit of a waste."

The man turned and fixed his gaze on John for a second, apparently assessing how serious John was about this. John was very serious. It offended him as a baker, even one who admittedly only recently started baking, that someone would buy something from him and then just not eat it. "Okay, clearly you're buying something so that you can sit in my shop all day and I'll feel too guilty to kick you out. I don't know why you'd want to do that, but fine. You can do whatever you like. I won't kick you out. Just please, don't buy anything unless you're at least going to try it," John pleaded ( ... )
