Funnily enough, I normally write cracky and humorous fills. But then I just got this image of a frightened and mute John, locked away and forgotten because no one knew how to deal with him. And everything just grew from there.
I'm glad you caught the almost tragic part of it. There's no true happy ending for this because John's lost everything he was. But with Sherlock he can get some of his old life back.

Oh, oh, oh - this is so terribly lovely! I'm not usually a fan of were- stories, but this is something completely different (and I find I have no need to know HOW or WHY John changed). I love John, as the John we know and as a border collie, and it's so lovely that Mycroft recognized him as a potential friend for Sherlock.

Thank you for your lovely review! I just saw John as the perfect border collie: intelligent, fiercely loyal, hardworking, on the smallish side, and perfect for cuddling.
Mycroft was fun to play with. He was so good with John and even grew to be fond of him, but the only reason he helped him in the first place was because he thought John would be beneficial to Sherlock. If John hadn't shown himself to be useful, Mycroft probably would have just left him to be locked away and forgotten. Mycroft can be a good man, if it suits him.

Tearing up here. My dog died just over three years ago, and our family swore she was becoming human in her moods and little quirks. (Like how she decided that sleeping at the foot of the bed was inferior to sleeping with her head on the pillow like everyone else.)
Following John through his journey in assimilation (with an adorable Mycroft) and seeing how he could still be confused by duplicitous humans is just amazing. This is such a thoughtful, touching fic.
Thanks for all the lovely reviews! I have to say, I'm flattered that this caused some tears. I was thinking of my partner-in-crime Tori (long gone to the great dog park in the sky) while writing this, and she was the inspiration for border collie!John.
I've cleaned it up and added some parts. You can find it here:

So I had passed this story up several times, not sure it was my thing or not what I was in the mood for but I finally read it. Oh the time lost! I could have had this delicous fluff and angst so long ago. If only I had read it sooner! I love this so much that I had to go cuddle my dog afterwards. <3

I'm glad I managed to show John's transition to the human world. He'll never get it quite right, but Sherlock's there to watch his back.
