Things Sherlock and John don't know about each other:

Fresh out of uni, Sherlock got work bartending at a club. Because cocaine doesn't buy itself, and, hey, it's a good way to observe people. He quit when he went clean because the job only encouraged his self-destructive habits- getting high and going home with a different man every night.

~

The first time John ever had sex with a man was the week before his second tour in Afghanistan. His mates took him out for a good time and somehow he ended up taking home the bartender from some club they went to. Tall, skinny, handsome bloke. (John will admit to having a preference for the type ever since.) Guessed his drink just by looking at his wallet. Shame he was too drunk to remember the guy's name the next day. The sex was fantastic.

tl;dr Sherlock and John had a random one night stand years ago. Neither of them remembers the other. Bonus points if one of them says/does something that causes the other to remember.

Thank you for the kind words! Things will make more sense eventually! AND THERE WILL BE SMEX, I PROMISE

Sounds of the bubbling city streaked and bubbled against the windowpane, and John thought. He had no clue what he was thinking about, what exactly was this itchy feeling that was keeping him from sleep. Nevertheless, he could feel the distraction dancing around in his head, spinning, twirling around itself.

“This must be what Sherlock goes through on a nightly basis,” he mumbled aloud to himself. At the recollection of his flatmate, the thought began to ripple and bulge.

Biting his lip in concentration, he turned toward the wall. The clamour from outside bounced in his ears, thudding with every beat. He was never a fan of the strange synth music they played in clubs. Hell, we wasn’t even a fan of clubs at all, but his mates insisted. “One last hurrah,” they’d urged, “Before we’re back to the Giant Sandbox ( ... )

GUYS, I'M SUPPOSED TO BE ASLEEP, WHAT THE HELL. ;-) REGULAR DISCLAIMERS OF "DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT" STILL APPLY.That was definitely the click of a door - he hadn’t imagined this one. Sherlock was sat bolt-upright on his bed, head tilted in the direction of the living room. Through his closed bedroom door, he could hear another click of a door closing, and felt the vibrations of someone walking across the hardwood floors ( ... )

“That…” the soldier breathed, “Was amazingIf he grinned any wider, Sherlock was sure, his cheekbones would snap in half. “Yes, I know.” He dimmed his smile down somewhat, poking a long finger into the vodka and swirling it around, pleased at the small gasp it triggered. “Another thing Jim told me about rosemary,” he barged on conversationally, “Was that it was made for ‘lonely hearts,’ so to speak - men with no wives, no girlfriends, no one to go home to. I suppose it’s from the name itself - a herb with a woman’s name makes a poor substitute for the actual article, but substitutes nonetheless.” He brought his finger to his lips, fully aware that John was following his every move, and darted his tongue out, lapping the bitter vodka from his fingertip ( ... )

damn.
sherlock and his moves are so very hot to read. why do i get the impression that john is a picture of wariness. does he suspect that sherlock remembered all along, and has been gloating in this secret? did sherlock know all along? what's going to happen now, and can it involve rosemary? ah, gods, you are doing such an incredible job of filling this. thanks so much for writing.
